I know nothing about soccer. How do they get these superstars with multimillion dollar contracts to play for free and risk career ending injury in such an aggressive tournament? NFL guys surely wouldn’t do this. Is it all competitiveness and national pride?

It's literally the biggest honor for all of these superstars to play and potentially win the World Cup. It solidifies your legacy and there are winners fees as well.

They aren't playing in the World Cup for free.

It's not for free unless you are Argentine apparently.

The salary they get from the national team is still peanuts compared to their club salaries.

Regardless, FIFA also has to pay the clubs for the amount of players playing in the tournament.

The players that don't get out of the group can still at least $22k per game. The French players are getting at least a $200k bonus just for winning.

It may not be what they would get from their club, but it's not nothing.

If you are only getting 22k/game and you lose all 3 games so you don't get a bonus for winning any games, then you are making 66k over 11 days. Add a little extra if you play in the warm-up friendlies.

Wages aside there's a pretty drastic economic benefit via exposure to the entire globe.

Got it- so they become a much bigger draw for fans and a club to pay and buy merch, etc. Obviously it’s an amazing honor.

Yeah, a good tournament could bring a larger contract and/or move to a bigger club/league.

Pretty great example is Domagoj Vida. Before the tournament he was linked to Watford. Now he's linked to Liverpool.

The reverse would also be true as well. It would be a pretty big hit to a players reputation to purposely avoid international play without good reason.

LINK

Here is a link to the prize money. It's 38 million Euros for the first place team and 8 million Euros for the teams eliminated in the first round.

Now my question is how that money is divided up. Are there any guidelines? Can the national federation just take all of the money? Does it include coaches, staff, etc or just players?

I would guess that whatever portion is allotted to the team would be split 23 ways, but that may also be different.

Chucky Lozano and Benjamin Pavard also definitely increased their profile in a big way.

A lot of the England team donated their winnings and I know M’bappe Is as well.

The pay isn’t important to a lot of the players

I'm sure that hits his pocket book hard.

Oh no bother he'll be getting paid the highest wages ever for Real Madrid in 2019.

This particular wc, the refs were less willing to.protect players. Not enough yellow and red to suit me.

To your point the Uruguayan striker,Cavani, had calf injury in game v Portugal. He was a star for psg.(Paris)
He's 31. Makes 7 million a year.
The injury was not caused by others.

You’re delusional if you think PSG is going to let go of perhaps the most hyped teenager of all time a year after they got him

Read an article where government, federation, etcetera, are trying to determine the best way to employ his celebrity in France.

They will keep him in France, for sure (at least for the time being).

Goes to the federation, who then allocates it. Jack Warner basically took all of T&T's prize money in 2006. Wasn't supposed to be able to, but I don't think their players ever saw any of that money.
