Starting Line-Up Against China

No Rapinoe and no Jrue's wife.
What line-ups do we want to see? I'm particularly concerned about center midfield. Do we actually see Boxx again?

If we do, I hope it isn't Solo's.

Play a 4-3-3
Krieger-Becky-Johnston-klingenburg
Heath-Lloyd-Bryan
Press-Morgan-Leroux
They need speed and skill up front. Wambach is a super sub I would bring in around the 75 min for free kicks and corners. She's not going to win you anything on individual talent. The D has done well giving up one goal all tournament. Most would play Wambach but she just looks tired and old out there to me. I feel like they are playing her as a tribute.

I would start Press or Rodriguez in the Rapinoe role, play LeRoux and Morgan up top, thereby putting Wambach on the bench, but I don't know what to do with Jrue's lady.
We have tons of talented fullbacks and wingers, but not much in central midfield unless we play people out of position. Or 37-year old Boxx.

Any chance O'Hara or O'Reilly will be brought in? I realize they are two of our 3 position players who haven't played yet, but they are both legit and played many big games before.

I like O'Hara more than Kreiger myself but with her not getting any looks in the first 4 games something must be off with her in training. Same goes with O'Reilly. I assume Ellis likes Kreiger and her experience right now. The D isn't the problem. Lack of offensive flair and a second player up top to give them another speed striker is what's killing them. They need to press when they are on their side of mid and show some attacking looks. I don't think China can beat them even with Wambach starting but is Abby starts against France or Germany I don't think they have a shot. They have to match those two shot for shot. I look at it this way - Wambach is good on crosses, corners, and free kicks. That amounts to probably 10-12 minutes of a 90 minute game so for 80 minutes we are playing with 10. I also can't stand Abby and the missed PK only made me dislike her even more

Press is better suited as a forward than a mid in my opinion. I wouldn't mind Rodriquez as a attacking mid as well.

I agree. Let Wambach come on late but lets see what Leroux and Morgan can get going up top. Abby has been awful tbh although hopefully she finds her form.

I'm guessing 4-4-2 with a diamond:
-------LeRoux-Morgan-------
---------------Lloyd---------------
Heath--------------------Press
---------------Boxx--------------
Kling-------------------Kreiger
---Sauerbrunn-Johnston---
--------Ashlyn Harris*--------
*Gulati grows some balls and suspends Solo

If we do run a 4-4-2, how the hell do we pull that off?
Can anyone partner with Lloyd other than Boxx?

Boxx going to take a walker out to the pitch with her? Would rather see Rampone and Wambach if this is going to be a tribute to the past match.

If we play a 4-4-2 against China we lose no matter who starts.

China isn't impressive. We will win 9 times out of 10. They have a weak, weak offense, and we have the best defense and goalkeeping in the world.
However, it will be very tough to go past the semis without offensive creativity (basically great defending and hoping we get penalties or corners).

I just want to see better possession and attempts at shots on goal. This team is not very good compared to past US teams.

It should be: 4-3-3
--Morgan -- Press -- Leroux--
--O'Reilly - Lloyd - Brian---
Kling - Saur - Johnston - Kreiger
--------------Solo-------------
*bring abby in late for set pieces if necessary
*Heather O'Reilly for Pino - Tobin sucked last night. Cheney was God awful.
*sub in K. O'Harah for outside D if we need more offense. She's awesome but D has been solid so far.
But Jill Ellis is the Les Miles of soccer and will continue with her stubborn ways and 1 dimensional offense.
It will be:4-4-2
------Morgan --- Abby------
Brian -- Lloyd -- Cheney -- Press
Kling - Saur - Johnston - O'Hara
--------------Solo-------------
*Yes, she will put Press at mid where she's not comfortable just to get her on the field. If only there was a formation where you could have 3 forwards on the field at once. Hmmm.....
*O'Hara is a good player - she deserves a start.

Are you talking about Dick Cheney and Kobe Bryant?
I'm confused.

Oops - should be Brian, not Bryant. Cheney = Holiday.

Lauren Holiday is suspended for the next match. Where would you play Mia Hamm?

I think I would start Brian in the middle. You can always play Boxx in the second half if Brian melts down in the first.
I might even think about playing Klingenberg in Rapinoe's spot (with Chalupny at LB.)
It would help to provide some defensive cover for the midfield. There is no direct replacement for Rapinoe, anyway. You either go defense or pace in her place. Klingenberg looked okay at midfield (admittedly for 10 minutes) in the Nigeria game, and Chalupny would be fine at LB.
I'd save three offensive subs (Rodriguez, whatever forward is still on the bench, O' Reilly, Press, O'Hara) for the second half - if needed.
BTW, I expect zero tactical nuance from Ellis. We'll be aimlessly hoofing balls at Wambach and misplaying balls through the midfield.
