As long as I've been following European football (about 10-12 years), they have always been in the CL or Europa.

This year they are relegated? Dafuq?

From what I remember they hit some financial trouble a year or two ago, they hired David Wagner, and then everything just crumbled.

They finished 14th the season before Wagner took over (at no point were they higher than 12th). He actually had them doing pretty well in the table until after matchday 25 in 2019/20 (were 3rd at matchday 13, 6th at matchday 25). They weren't good, but were at least getting results before the wheels fell off again.

I mean, this is hardly an overnight thing. This has been inevitable for a few years now.

Yes, but to say they started to decline under him is wrong. Schalke was trash before he walked in the door and they actually finished higher in the table under him than the year prior.

When this guy leaves your club, you’re fricked

The real reason is salaries that required Champions League football to break even or a small loss became too much when they made the CL once in 6 or 7 years.

they imposed their own salary cap on themselves
"the club now plans to pay no more than 2.5 million euros a year for a player's salary.

They got next to nothing on an ungodly number of talented players. The McKennie deal was one of the best deals they made.

Matip, Goretzka, Max Meyer, and Kolasinic all left for free. Neuer and Ozil went for cheap as well.

I think they got some decent money for Sane and Draxler but that’s it.
