all of these countries whose best athletes play soccer from the git-go rather than baseball, football and basketball.
From the FIFA top 30 (we are #16), bottom up:
Canada (hockey and Canadian football excepted)
Algeria
Australia (Rugby and Aussie Rules football excepted)
Turkiye
Nigeria - failed to qualify
Ecuador
Austria
Iran
Denmark - failed to qualify
Uruguay
Senegal
Japan (baseball excepted)
Italy - failed to qualify
Croatia
Germany
Mexico
Netherlands
Portugal
Brazil
Forgive me if I missed anyone.

When I keep seeing we are so far away I just laugh.
yeah, and so is Brazil, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Mexico...
Truth is most of us are far off the levels of France and Messi.

When I look at this list, it hit me that the three former British colonies (US, Canada and Australia) all have professional leagues that supercede soccer.
The US: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL
Canada: NHL, CFL
Australia: Australian Rules Football, Rugby and Cricket
I don't think any other country on that list has a profession league that is bigger than their national soccer league. I know they have basketball in Europe now, but it is not as big as soccer.
Edit: forgot about baseball in Japan.

True but those countries will do whatever it takes to get back to catch up to France and Messi. Our organization is run by a bunch of retards.
The fact that Ream was even on our squad is a great example of how poorly run we are. There’s no young hungry CB that we could’ve chosen or prepped the last 4 years for this moment? Instead we just waste time keeping a 40yr old MLS bum. Thats not investing in the future.

My bad. I was thinking about that when I made up this list, and I couldn't come up with anything, but now I realize that baseball is very big there. I will amend.

Lithuania and maybe Serbia are the exceptions to this rule.

Kind of unfair to call him a bum. He used to be a lot better when he was younger.
But it is a colossal failure on the part of the people who run the organization that he was our best option.

As Dempsey and Henry said, there are levels to this. The US is still in the third tier of teams on their best day. We had a chance to jump a tier, but completely blew it.
Argentina-France
------
Spain-Brazil-Belgium-Germany-Netherlands-Portugal-Norway-England-Morocco
------
US-Mexico-Canada-Japan-Egypt-Senegal

This is true. There are different levels, and that is not in question.
But the infuriating part is that Mexico played like their hair was on fire. USA played like they shite their pants.

What has he done for us? Nothing. Last two world cups he got manhandled when it counted most. Hes not good. He's good enough for mls sure but thats not saying much as the MLS is the Canadian football league of the soccer world.

Total agreement. The effort wasn't there for the US and the only explanation is the moment was too big for them. It was odd that it was pretty much the entire team though. You would have hoped to have some individual performances that were at least above average. Tillman was about it.

In the first half after going down 2-0 they did, but so did we for a few minutes and we tied it 1-1. In the 2nd half after going down a man England bunkered and let Mexico have the ball and they produced a .01 xG with like 90% possession. They played just as shitty as we did, except they had possession of the ball.
ETA: Talked to my Mexican friends, and they are as angry about their performance as we are about ours.

Agreed. I can't think of anyone who played well other than Tillman.
Belgium is a better team, but we made it too easy for them.
When that happens, something is fundamentally wrong. I'm not sold on our coach as a leader of men.

Mexico played stupidly from the aspect that they tried the same formula 50 times in a row. Being a man up should have given them more options. They just didn’t try to score in other ways.
The USA got bullied out there for 85 percent of the game.

Up until the game against Turkey, I thought he did a great job managing the team's mentality. I didn't really agree with benching the starters for the game and the way he handled subs outside of the guys on yellow cards. Our other starters needed a game's worth of reps against a good team before getting to the round of 16, especially Freese.
Not really his fault, but clearly the team was all out of sorts with the Balogun situation. Saw an announcer say basically that when that news was announced, the US team relaxed and the Belgians got pissed off. The roles shifted overnight and the US team wasn't mentally strong enough to handle it.

Oh yes, but this is different than not having the talent.
Might need to add Argentina to the list. Don't even think Messi can drag them out of this.
And he does it, scratch Argentina and put Egypt on the list.

I disagree. Belgium's coach made his lineup changes to exploit advantages that he had found in weaknesses in the US defense, aka, Tim Ream.
The Balogun situation was a minor issue.

We bowed out at the same stage as Brazil and by a more embarrassing margin. I don't give a crap about group stage stats.
This is a loser's mentality.
