So how long till MLS gets some form of relegation?

Saw a topic on bleacher report and stuff talking about getting rid of playoffs and settin up the tiers below MLS.

It's not even on the radar. MLS can't afford big market teams to go down. The clubs aren't established enough or even close to established enough to withstand going down either.

It's not possible. The American sports system is completely different than the rest of the world's. For instance Clint Dempsey was technically transferred to MLS, not the Seattle Sounders. The rest of the soccer world participates in free trade, not all of the shared revenue collective bargaining nonsense we do in America.

the only way it would ever happen would be if the MLS created a new division but i don't see it happen for a long long long time.

The MLS would have to quickly add 5 or 6 USL or lower level clubs to act as a buffer for the established teams for the first few years.

This will not happen for a LONG while if ever. It's hard to get the American owners to start and run franchises if there is a threat of relegation. I would prefer it, but it's just not anywhere near stable enough to have promotion/relegation at this point.

An interesting idea is this. Relegation has to be implemented at the very beginning or it's not happening. The women's game has gone through leagues coming and going, so their next incarnation could experiment with promotion and relegation.

They would need a minimum of 40 teams to even consider it.

I wonder what the process is if you wanted to start a new club in England? I know it's rare but a few years ago a new Wimbledon club was started after the previous one had moved.

You wouldn't need 40. Just need the NASL to gain a lil credibility so that some teams would be able to come up an not immediately be relegated

You also need all the owners of MLS franchises to agree to it which they wouldn't do for a long, long time if ever. I would like to see relegation in the US but I don't see it happening for at least another 25 years or more.

Think how much money in total revenue the MLS would lose if the Galaxy, Sounders and Red Bulls got relegated and the Carolina RedHawks, Minnesota United and the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers got promoted from the NASL.
Doomsday scenario, yes, but it would be a possible risk which is why there is absolutely no shot the MLS will do it.

Another interesting thing to consider. Most countries that have 100s of pro teams to consist in the pyramid.... are all the size of one of our states. The smaller clubs can travel from one part of the country to another relatively cheaply. Not really the case in the USA. basically anything below the 2nd tier would have to be regional.

Well everyone keeps saying about the big markets dropping but this rarely happens in Europe; Man U, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich or a team of there stature hardly ever get relegated. Anyways I think maybe ten years from now if MLS teams/owners throw some cash into developing some lesser leagues in the country and more developmental academy's in the states I think it could happen. But yes maybe twenty years is plausible for another generation to grow up loving soccer spreading it through out the country .

Those teams don't get relegated because because they can spend as much money as they want. If they still suck that manager won't be there very long.
