Yeah, I'm not going to have awesome expectations, but I think that the US has an alright chance of taking points off of all but a few teams. Inevitably, there will be a few teams that self-destruct and a number of upsets. As long as the US doesn't end up in a group with two exceptionally well functioning teams, I think that they have a measurable opportunity to advance.

Not really worried about Columbia. Don't think there's enough talent in south Carolina or Missouri to take us down. I just hope we don't get paired with Colombia.

Colombia has one of the most stacked rosters in the WC; their top players just don't play in England.
They almost all play and star for big sides. The few that don't are soon to be the next €30m transfers for clubs like Udinese and Cagliari.
In addition to Switzerland, I'd rather draw Belgium or Uruguay over Colombia even though beating any of the 1st pot sides will be unlikely.
In addition to Falcao, Luis Muriel (Udinese) and Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina), Jackson Martinez (Porto), James Rodriguez (Monaco) and Victor Ibarbo (Cagliari) are budding superstars in the attack.
Fredy Guarin (Inter) and Pablo Armero (Napoli) are world class players. Zuniga (Napoli) Yepes (Atalanta) and Zapata (AC Milan) are all experienced higher level defenders.
The only real question they may have is GK as I don't even recall who's started there for them recently?
I'd consider Colombia much more of a "dark horse" threat to win the whole tournament than teams like Belgium or Chile people mention.

Not to even mention that you'd have Pablo Armero (who may be the best attacking LB in the world) busting down the other flank all while trying to mark Falcao probably coupled with a lightning quick second striker like Luis Muriel with Fredy Guarin or James Rodriguez sitting in behind.
The more I think about it, I'd probably like our chances more against Argentina that at least has more issues in defense.

Italy ain't what they used to be, and Germany would be a good story and Jurgen would get the team fired up. Algeria, we should beat 8 out of 10 times.

According to Wiki, it looks like their starting goalkeeper plays for Nice but is currently injured. As a consequence, they were forced to call in Faryd Mondragon for their friendlies these past few days

I'd MUCH rather play Uruguay (and probably) Argentina than Colombia.
Want no part of Colombia or Belgium in 2014. There are many "name" sides (France, Italy, Portugal, England, any of the African sides) that I'd rather see.

He means competitive in that it's not a friendly and that Italy beat Germany in their last competitive match against them in EURO 2012.
I'd think the USA may have a better chance against Italy than some of the other top10 sides but it would certainly be like picking cyanide instead of arsenic to hope for them in a group from the 4th pot.
What's perhaps better about a potential match-up with Italy (compared to Colombia or Germany, for example) is that they often have trouble putting over matched sides who stay packed back on defense away even if they're completely dominating the midfield (like against England in the last EUROs).
I still certainly wouldn't count on Italy not being among the last few European sides standing next summer. They usually always are.

Maybe but Denmark and Czech Republic are certainly not pushovers. Armenia with Henrikh Mkhitaryan is dangerous like Montenegro.
That said, I'd agree that Italy isn't the same style team they've been in the past. Their strength is in the smooth as silk passing midfield and CBs that aren't defenders on the level of their past greats but better at playing the ball out of the back and picking out key passes.
Their weakness is similar to Juve's, where most of the starters play, inconsistency at putting away all the chances the midfield creates so a lot will rest on Balotelli being clinical, everyone's favorite Rossi or some of the younger second strikers like Lorenzo Insigne, Alessio Cerci or maybe El-Sharawaay providing some quality off the bench.
