Liverpool and Manchester United are in talks about a bombshell plot involving Europe's biggest football clubs to join a new FIFA-backed tournament that would reshape the sport's global landscape.
Sky News has learned that financiers are assembling a $6 billion (£4.6 billion) funding package to assist the creation of what could become known as the European Premier League.
quote:
As many as five English clubs could sign up to join it, with a provisional start date said to have been discussed as early as 2022.
Sources said that FIFA, football's world governing body, had been involved in developing the new format, which is expected to comprise up to 18 teams, and involve fixtures played during the regular European season.
The top-placed teams in the league would then play in a knockout format to conclude the tournament, with prize money for the winners expected to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds each year
quote:
According to insiders, a handful of English sides have been approached about joining the league, with the other candidates comprising Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
It is not thought that any of the English clubs have yet signed legally binding terms to join, and it was unclear which member of the so-called 'big six' would miss out if only five are ultimately involved.
The news will drop a fresh bombshell into the fracturing landscape of English football, which has spent recent weeks at loggerheads over proposals - engineered by Liverpool and Manchester United - to hand more power to the biggest clubs while providing a coronavirus bailout for teams below the top flight.
quote:
As part of that blueprint, the founder clubs could not be relegated for 20 years, although the remaining teams would be subject to being replaced depending upon their league position at the end of each season.
Seems pretty gay.

It would be glorious if all the locals and Brit fans just started watching and supporting lower league teams.
Esp the bigger clubs with fans all over the country

I mean if eufa is already talking About it you have to be part of the conversation. Could you imagine England being left out and Germany and Spanish giants are making a hundred million more euros a year than the teams in the PL?
These things don’t happen in a vacuum. If Liverpool then their nose up then spurs gets invited and make a hundred million more euros.
Yes no one really wants this change but you are with part of the conversation or you are left behind.

Who’s gonna get the Tv rights? I’m gonna have to sign up and pay for another sub? The absolute gall

So would this essentially just replace the champions league and not require the top teams to qualify every year?

Just when you think you don’t have another reason to hate some clubs

In this scenario I'd imagine it would have to be City.

The tweet in the OP says Liverpool is one of the teams in conversation for this league

An autocorrect makes it harder, but the premise is that people are shitting on them for being part of the discussion. If the English teams said no thanks because we're going to keep sharing our money with other teams, they would be left out.

yes, one thought flows from the other. If Liverpool (or whoever) is supposed to be just say no to more money, they would be giving a competitor the invite.
I didn't think it was a hard conversation to follow.

Ah ok, so just hypothetically

Yes I know but the way you said it is if Liverpool would
They’re the ones who likely started this with United due to their American Owners
I don’t see any reason why they’d back out of this
If anything it would be other teams that were invited with more British backings
I think this is just showing once again how American owners are vs Foreign
For Americans the team is an investment
For foreigners it’s to win
