they cant. they are requiring these owners and new cities buying in to invest a TON of money. none of that would be possible if they had a chance of being relegated

If they were to implement pro/rel, they would probably incorporate USL. They would need USL2 to get up and running, and then they would need to figure out how to handle the MLS reserve teams that are currently in USL.

Yes.

Putting it in is going to be nearly impossible with MLS’ franchise model — which has allowed the league to survive and grow in the North American landscape, but holds it back in a traditional soccer sense.

But, if the game can continue to grow, we could see it happening sometime in our lifetimes. Don’t need to rush it and jeopardize the league.

There aren't minor leagues of soccer with teams and owners independent of the mls to which to relegate.

Its too soon. There isn't the kind of support for the sport.
Next generation.

There are, and there will be another in 2019.

Yes, but only after we improve the reach, the quality, and the depth of a second and third league at minimum.

Yeah I echo what WSE says. And we need a more stable second division first, IMO. A good goal though and I hope we make it happen sometime in the next 20 years or so.

I don’t really know if we need a third league before it happens. Two strong ones should be enough.

USL 2 starts in 2019. If you bring in USL to be the 2nd division, then you may as well bring in USL 2 and have 3.

In the long-term? Absolutely.

Right now in 2018? No. It would be a disaster that would risk killing all the progress we’ve made in the last 25 years. See: the NASL (twice) and many other dead leagues for what happens when there is no limit on what teams can spend.

Let’s give not only MLS time to grow and solidify itself, but the other leagues as well. The USL has grown tremendously in the last 5 years, and that needs to continue if you ever want to see any pro-rel.

I think some form of limited pro-rel is inevitable in the long term. There are simply too many big markets in this country for only 28-ish top-level teams. Our country can support dozens with the right structure.

I think you’ll see pro-rel between the USL divisions first, and then eventually between MLS and USL. It will probably in the form of an MLS 1 and MLS 2 where teams share TV rights and frequently play across divisions.

There's already a little talk about them considering this.

TV will have a lot to say about who exactly they allow to be relegated... Just like TV is the reason we have two MLS teams now in LA and NYC

Relegation would also be boring if it was a foregone conclusion the relegated team would come back quickly. In England, some relegated teams get relegated again and that drives home the consequences of it.
