Question about 2026 FIFA World Cup

It is customary that the host nation gets a spot and plays opening day. In '26 there are 3 host nations, so will all 3 get a bid? I am assuming so as Japan and Korea both got spots when they co-hosted.

I don't think that has officially been determined but it will 99.9% be the case, especially with the World Cup increasing from 32 to 48 teams beginning with 2026. Will be interesting to see what it does to CONCACAF qualifying.. looks like we only get 6 spots as a confederation (actually up from 3.5), which is a lot considering the quality (or lack thereof) of CONCACAF. So I wonder if we go to a different format than the Hexagonal... if we keep it for 2026 then 3 teams will make it from 8 total playing (without USA, MEX, CAN). You can basically go ahead and pencil in Jamaica and Honduras for the 2026 World Cup as well.
We should never miss another WC assuming we make 2022.

Wasn’t senegal-france the 2002 opener?
I wanna say it’s either the defending champs (like france in 02) or a host.

The 2002 World Cup will always be my fondest memory of soccer as that is what got me into the sport to begin with at age 14. Woke up every morning at 5 AM (if not earlier) to catch as many games as I could. Didn't take long for Miroslav Klose to become my favorite player.

Yep, but the last four World Cups have been the host country playing the opener.

Wasn't 02 when the US got into the Quarters? They had a midfielder that just could hold possession. He was going to be a star then got injured. Am I recalling that correctly?
98 was the flop when they came out in a 4-5-1 and got drug by Iran and they had to scramble to explain the formation was trying to set up what they described as a "power play"

Yes.

John O'Brien? He was the only midfielder on the roster that I can remember being plagued by injuries.

We beat Mexico no less in the knockout stages.

Anyone who melts after a loss to Mexico in some gay arse concacaf setting needs to just go back and watch that last 16 game.

well we had O'brien that came through the ajax system.
pretty unheard of for americans.

O'Brien was one of the first Americans to earn a starting spot with a major European team, with Ajax Amsterdam
quote:
"He’s as talented a midfielder as U.S. Soccer has ever had – a terrific passer of the ball, read the game well and scored goals as well, even though it wasn’t his forte," former USMNT head coach Bruce Arena said years ago. "He was one of the better players on that [2002] U.S. team. He could have been a fixture for the U.S. team and played for a big club team. It’s unfortunate he wasn’t able to continue in his career."

We only won 1 group stage match and it just happened to be against on the the favorites to win the tournament.

Friedel, Sanneh, Hedjuk, Eddie Pope, Bocanegra, Agoos (the one legitimately bad starter), Mastroeni, O’ Brien, Donovan, young man Beasley, and McBride with the occasional Clint Mathis cameo.
