This is why Landon and I are BFFs:

“I think it's a testament to our league that people want to come back and play here, particularly six months before a World Cup,” Donovan told reporters before the national team's training session Thursday morning at StubHub Center. “It's a strong statement. ... Michael's a smart guy. And I'm sure he's thought about this a lot, and it's something he wants to do, and it's great.”
quote:
“I think all of us who know Tim [Leiweke, president and CEO of TFC ownership group Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment] closely knew that he would make a splash, and he did, and it's great for our league,” said Donovan, who worked with Leiweke during his stint as president and CEO of AEG, which owns the Galaxy. “It's great that another American player in [his] prime wants to come home and play here.”
quote:
“They are chasing their dreams,” Donovan said. “I think they made decisions that are good for them, just like everybody should.”
quote:
“We always say it's not where we want it to be, but when guys like Michael and Clint make decisions like that, when [Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez] and Sporting Kansas City standouts] Matt Besler and Graham Zusi make the decision to stay here when they could have gone abroad, it makes a big statement. The way you make the league better is by having better players, and certainly in the last six months, it's gotten two of our best players back in the league.”

taking another look at it
if the floor in MLS is around 35k sure thats great but the avg salary in League 2( 4th Division in england) is around 39k pounds which is roughly 64k dollars.
The MLS still has a long way to go to be competitive paying not just big time players but getting much better average players to bring up as a whole.

We get it. You view MLS as the equivalent of 9th grade girls rec soccer.
Zero fricks are given - I'll still watch and I'm stoked that I'll be able to watch the US' best.... errrr... two best.... errrr three best (before Jermaine Jones comes) players week in and week out.

Why did you compare MLS floor salary to League 2 average salary? Shouldn't you compare the two averages, or the two floors?

I'm actually usually pretty impressed whenever I look at some random player's salary in MLS now. It's not exceptional money for the average player, but it's not, "frick this shite, I'm going to Scandinavia" money anymore, either.
Here's an alright breakdown

For the higher end player (Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley) - their development is probably enhanced going abroad. (Though you could argue that at a certain talent level it really doesn't matter.)
I would argue that for the "mid-range" national teamer (Goodson, Zusi, Eddie Johnson, Mo Edu) allowing them to stay here, make similar (or better money) than a bad league (Scandanavia) or a bad situation (Edu or Shea at Stoke, Feilhaber at Derby, Jozy at Hull) is more beneficial for the national team as a whole.

b/c League 2 is the lowest level of professional soccer in England. The level of play is well bad way worse than MLS.
Compared to the Championship/League One which is about the same level of pay the MLS is not the same.
The average championship player makes 211K pounds roughly 350k dollars. The average MLS Salary in that link is 160k.

If you give me a choice to make 350k and live in England and 160k and live in the US, I would still pick the US.
Also, there is the hope and in the very near future, the 160k average will rise.

have you ever been to england? There is no city in the states that i would live in over London.
the Championship is still a better league

still not enough to compete and steal players from europe. If MLS is serious about becoming a top 5 league in the world the salary cap need to go. Also european are not very found of the franchise concept and trading players and such, we would need a viable 2nd division to start a promotion/relegation system.

The United States will cease to exist as a nation before we institute promotion/relagation in any professional sport in this country.

I live in Rancho Cucamonga. I like it fifty times better than London. I lived in SF and santa monica for 5 years each and they both blow London away.
We were in London last year for the olympics and my wife remarked that it ws a dirtier version of Manhattan. That is a pretty accurate comment.

You have lost what little credibility you have with this post

Just out of curiosity, are you a fan of any soccer outside of the MLS? You already mentioned in this thread that you aren't a fan of the USMNT and don't seem to hold overseas soccer in high regard.
Not saying that that is wrong by any means, but it is definitely against the norm. If you don't mind me asking, how did you become a fan of the MLS?

This is not true. They are my favorite team in any sport (club or national team). they are the only team that I actually have a jersey for.
Actually, in order, it is USMNT, Detroit Pistons, Univ of Michigan Football. There is no MLS team that I particularly grew up with.
I acutally don't enjoy watching USMNT games because they stress me out too much! I know that this is unhealthy. :) The USA England game in the alst world cup was a prime example.
