Not really.

De Rossi was Roma’s midfield general.

The fans literally called him the general.

Does anyone really remember the 8 combined minutes in 2 friendlies under Bruce? He want from those 2 cameos to immediate starter (except for the games he missed while at the U20 WC).

Say what you want about playing for his dad, but he earned that spot every time he stepped on the field. I can’t think of anyone I would have started over him. As a matter of fact, I had more confidence in Bradley’s last team than I have had in any of jurgens Bruce’s or berhalters. Think about that.

I agree. He looked a lot better when his dad was coaching. He got put in a crappy position in WC 2014 because of Altidore's injury, but still, you'd hope somebody with his experience could fill the role well enough. I'm not sure yet on how he will fit in with Berhalter as he's still tinkering with things. I won't be too surprised if he's still our guy come 2022, even at 34...and that kinda scares me. Hopefully some youth talent will step up and take control of the midfield. I have no clue who that is right now.

I think he got put in that position because we didn't have any creative midfielders, so Jurgen tried to make him play further up than he was really comfortable with. At least that's what I remember.

When Jozy Altidore pulled up with a hamstring injury 20 minutes into the World Cup, it threw the U.S. lineup into flux. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann brought in an extra midfielder to cover the loss, leaving Clint Dempsey to play as the lone striker.

With the shift, Bradley was asked to cover Dempsey’s role as a second supporting striker but no one filled Bradley’s place as a true central midfielder. Both Jermaine Jones and Kyle Beckerman played as holding defensive midfielders, often being called to cover the outside backs during the first three matches.

You are also right. He had been playing as a CAM in the 4-4-2 for a couple months leading up to the world cup and that's what was used against Ghana. But after Altidore was injured, reverted back to the 4-2-3-1 with him still being in the CAM position. So he went into the world cup at not his normal position, then was put into the old formation but not at his position that he played when they did use that formation.

Right. I don't think he ever played as a secondary striker like that article suggested.

I’m hoping by 2022 Bradley will be a come off the bench in the 75th minute and lock things down kind of guy.

I hope so too...Who do you think could fill the starter role?

If he is that’s a bad sign because he’s far past his prime and I think people vastly overrate the apex of his career.

He’s like a destitute man’s Axel Wisel.

I’m hoping Gregg drops the Adams as the inverted RB thing and just plays him in his natural position.

Have we given up on Yedlin now?

We shouldn’t but our coach makes wants to play one of our best midfielders as a defender when we have an EPL starter in that position. (Though I understand it for the original plan with the Gold Cup since Yedlin just had surgery)

I hope not, but if Gregg is hellbent on making his RB an inverted midfielder on the attack, that definitely doesn't fit Yedlin's skillset.

I would hope that if Gregg has Yedlin in camp, he would be willing to be flexible with his gameplanning and not try and push a square peg in a round hole.

But I'm not sure yet.

It would have been great to see this stuff last year and have our shite together now, but I won't beat that dead horse.

I am stretching my mind trying to give GB credit right now. I am hoping his approach will be beneficial. It's hard for me to give him too much hell when half our starters are injured though. At least he is attempting to make changes and still implement his style of play.

Personally my biggest concern is how shallow the player pool apparently is. Injuries are an issue for our prospects in this gold cup but it has revealed imo a dimmer estimation of our future. Whether it’s berhalter or guardiola there just doesn’t seem to be a lot to work with.

If you look at the countries we are trying to compete with, and compare their ability to replace their top 6 guys to ours.... we are behind. We’ve always been behind, but on our own path of travel it seems like we’ve slowed, maybe stopped, may even be going backwards.

I’m cautiously optimistic but the recent friendlies have made an impression, just not one I had hoped for.

I share your thoughts too. I was a lot more optimistic after the 2017 U-20 World Cup. Seeing Sargent blow up was cool, Pulisic was doing well at Dortmund, and all these young guys were getting looks from Euro clubs. It seemed that things were looking up for the upcoming talent. Now I'm not so sure. I hope the younger group came find a way to play well with the established veterans that we have and expect to keep for the next WC. I think replacing Bradley with somebody better is crucial to the success of this team. I'm just not seeing it right now. Maybe Adams is the guy...it doesn't matter to me who it is, but somebody needs to step up and take control of the midfield.
