To be fair to the ref, he also bundled the offsides call on Xavi's exquisite pass to Fabregas.

But we can continue to look at a 90 minute match through myopic perception for years, as the esteemed poster Randy Savage has proven time and again.

I'm pretty sure that doesn't make it any better, worse really, unless my understanding of the rule is way off.

My biggest issue with the way the match was called was that it negated City's main advantage. The game was interesting because it pitted City's strength vs Barca's agility. But I felt the ref called a lot of soft fouls on City negating that advantage and forcing them to play into Barca's style. It would have been a much more interesting match to let both sides play to their advantages, but we didn't really get to see it. And that was disappointing to me.

That said, City obviously played most of the game not to lose. So whatever.

Ball wasn't played to Pique and he was behind the ball for the pass to him. Pretty sure they flagged Fabregas anyway.

I'll tell you who Pellegrini should be mad at...himself, for picking Martin Demichelis

Aside from the penalty, he looked like a donkey out there. I was shocked when Pellegrini brought Demichelis to City and thought he would only be a bit part player at best. But starting against Barcelona in CL? I know injuries have forced Pellegrini's hand a bit but surely there were better options, either on the bench in Lescott or on the market when he brought him in.

Natastic is injured. So the only other option is Lescott. Both are lose/lose in my opinion. They tried hard to bring in other DC, but there just don't appear to be any on the market that are quality enough and play the style they want to play in the back.

Which is even more of a reason they should have played ultra aggressive. It's not like Barca looked great out there. Pellegrini just got gun shy after what Bayern did to City at home earlier in the year.

Yea with their attacking options, even without Kun, and Barca's garbage defending it's absurd that they played that way at home. Even before the red.

other than the two very soft Negredo fouls on Valdes, i can't remember there being a glut of soft fouls in that match. City got their money's worth on most of their challenges. just because Kompany or Zabaleta jumped up in shock after a foul was called doesn't mean it's soft

Yea that game got a little silly toward the end of the 1st half. Lot of clumsy fouls by City.

Was Demichellis REALLY that bad before the red? I agree Lescott should've started, but before the red, Demichellis had multiple key tackles that saved possible shots and goals. He's slow as Bornstein, but still, his experience must be valuable enough for Pellegrini.

I thought Demichellis played really well in the first half. His ability to read Barca's play and step up aggressively to intercept passes was something Lescott wouldn't have offered. I'd also add that seeing Lescott trying to pass against Barca's, lax by their standard, pressure after coming on makes it pretty clear why Demichellis started given Pellegrini's options.

He's slow but I'm not sure many CBs catch Messi on that breakaway. Demichellis should have just let Messi go and most likely beat Hart for the goal.

However, the goat was Navas as it was as good as 1-0 Barca the second he lost possession where he did.

Good point. I haven't seen the replay since watching live but I do recall thinking he kind of drifted into no man's land instead of trying to cut off the passing lane to Messi's run?

DeMichellis was coming from the other side of the field and completely caught out by the cheap giveaway if I remember correctly.

Played Messi onside. I'd have to see it again, and the development completely, to blame anyone other than Navas.

ETA: I don't think that there was anything in it. The entire back line was dropping off, Kompany deeper because he was lagging behind getting forward. They got caught trying to regroup, and Messi came back onside from an offside position, which is always a PITA to tract.

If I remember correctly, he tried to play Messi offsides, which in hindsight was a slight mistake.

I do think Navas takes the majority of the blame, though Kompany's positioning was awkward and Demichelis' tackle was inexcusable.
