Lashes out at referee.
I do kind of agree with his point that you don't use a referee from the soccer hotbed of Sweden for the final 16 of the Champions League.
Would you want a SWAC referee calling a Sweet 16 NCAA basketball game between a couple of top ten teams?

I'm sure he thought it was a foul when Navas lost the ball.
They really didn't show a great angle to see how much contact there was but Navas losing the ball there and going down was the key play. Demichelis should have just let Messi score but the Navas giveaway was at best putting City down 1-0.

Quite a tirade from a typically calm man. I´m surprised. Did the Abu Dhabians demand he pass the round of 16 in his contract?

i thought the ref did pretty damn well honestly. especially after i learned the exact PK rule (which he followed perfectly IMO). navas might have been nicked. hard to tell. overall he kept the match under control well, even when nerves almost seemed to boil over.

I didn't watch the match, but from everything I've read and the few highlights and replays I saw, I think that City played "not to lose".
I also think that Barca being Barca, and Messi being Messi--the ref was always going to give the benefit of the doubt to the Spaniards.
If those same exact plays happened against, say, Stoke City and Phil Dowd was ref, a foul would have been called on the Navas turnover. On the Demichelis foul, there very well could have been a red card, but no penalty.
City did not deserve to win. The did not deserve to lose 0-2, but did not deserve the win. A 0-0 draw at best.
I also think that Barca being Barca, and Messi being Messi--the ref was always going to give the benefit of the doubt to the Spaniards.

City actually played better at the end of the game, imo... not including the last goal, obviously.

City impressed me with their attacking patterns when they went a man down. They still pushed and looked impressive. I like watching this City team. They remind me of that excellent 2010 Chelsea team under Ancelotti, though City relies more on finesse while Chelsea relied on power.

I disagree. We were kind of tentative in the very early stages, but I thought we were playing a good balanced game prior to the sending off. After, I thought we were rightfully very aggressive and produced a number of good chances. Consequently barca got some good ones as well. Negredo couldn't finish his chances and putting dzeko on only made things worse by killing breakaways. Do I think we win if the sending off never happens? Not necessarily, but we were never completely out of it and the scoreline does not reflect how even the game was. Alves garbage time goal makes it look bad, but up until that point I felt confident that we could get a goal and finish a draw, even with 10 men.
