I share your opinion, and your enthusiasm.

I"m still worried about the depth of the defense a bit. However, that could easily change depending on if Gomez, Illori, and Wisdom can step up if needed

I like the business we did, as well... but am still concerned about our defense. I guess its not that surprising that BR has decided what we have is good enough (barring any additions)...

Like I said a couple of weeks ago, while not my first choice, I can get behind Benteke.. While Studge is out, I'd have to think our best bet of playing to our strengths, is playing a 4231... with Milner on the right, whipping in crosses to Benteke... Cou in the middle and Firmino on the left...

I know this goes against milner playing in the middle, as supposedly promised, but...

I think when all healthy, we have an abundance of attacking talent, and can play different formations to get the most out of all of them..

I just hope we don't have to suffer another season of BR doing the whole square peg/round hole thing..

I'm liking what I'm hearing about Gomez.

I really hope he gets time at CB, where the consensus says, thats his future... I hope we don't try and force him into a LB/RB role like we did Kelly and Wisdom..

I love Clyne, but we had to sign a RB

So am I, but at some point we have to stop throwing CB money at the wall to see what sticks. Its obviously systemic, because they all suck outside of Sakho. I'm ok with not wasting more money on it.

I can't go full in yet until I see what BR does with these pieces. Trust me, no one hopes we make this happen more than me. I still think about two years ago and 2009 all the time.

Nah, man. Blind optimism is the way to go. Especially now. In July. The defense will be fine.

I wasn't so much talking about CBs, the writing was on the wall when they extended Skrtel and Toure... But I would like to see Ilori given some time...

I was more so talking about the lack of a quality DM and someone who can really come in and be the #1 keeper.. Or at least push Mignolet to be the player he was second half of last season... The new guy seems like an improvement over Jones, but by most accounts is not the guy we need to push on for too 4

I think most of our defensive problems could be attributed to the system. I've just learned to accept it as it is. He doesn't see us needing a DM

Sky now reporting a deal for Benteke has been reached. We're paying what Villa was asking. His medical exam could come as soon as tomorrow morning according to the report.

The Ings goal was particularly nice. Good ball in from Clyne, and just a clean finish from Ings. More of that, please.

I agree, but that's why I have guarded optimism going into the season...

If we can outscore everyone like 2 seasons ago, then let's roll the dice... I like our signings in attack, but until I see it on the field, I don't know if that's the case..

I've given up on the idea of a DM as long as BR is here. To me its akin to us buying Messi or Ronaldo.

we are better than we were... but not getting klopp is gonna sting I feel... we had a chance, without any other bidders, to get him... won't be the same in January, imo.... we shall see how all these acquired pieces fit together... hoping for the best, fearing more mediocrity...

This has been much more of a Brendan's target window. He got his number one target this year and seems to think he's got the group of players he wants. This season (and maybe til January) is very much make or break for him.

I admit reading all the positive threads about Benteke has me more optimistic about him. Cautiously optimistic, but optimistic nonetheless. Sure we may have overpaid, but a lot more people than I thought, even outside of Villa fans saying we got a steal. At the end of the day though, we just need him to score goals.

I feel like this squad has a lot of talent and a lot of versatility so BR can do whatever he wants, but it might take some time to figure the right combinations. Hope he figures it out quickly though

I don't even mind that we overpaid a little bit for him, because it's all offset by the ridiculous amount MC overpaid for Sterling... I'm actually pretty excited about this season, but I do agree it's make or break for BR this year

Why are we playing such a crap preseason schedule? Watching PSG and Fiorentina last night had my wondering. Compared to the other big english clubs our preseason is shite
