Also, Jesus. Just saw Studge's finish again. That was unbelievable. Suarez who?

Lucas no longer has a role in this side. He can't play in a high line system so our line immediately drops 5 yards with him in the XI.
In 63 minutes he completed 19 pressing attempts. In 27 mins Joe Allen completed 16, literally doubling Lucas' presses per minute.
I am beyond speechless that Rodgers started him.
I think we were all a bit shocked that he got the starting nod over Allen or Can, but I do think he still has a role to play for the squad as long as we are participating in 4 different competitions. We need the depth, and I think he can go a good 50 minutes like he did in the first half against SOTON. But it is obvious that pairing him with Gerrard is simply a mistake. And we learned that a year ago.

Thoughts on our formation next week?
If we've practiced it at all I think the 3-5-2 would be our best shot at a good result.
I see City taking a note from Soton and pairing Fernando and Fernandinho in midfield, pushing Yaya farther forward, attempting to stifle Coutinho in the middle.
3-5-2 is strong in defense, and should free Coutinho in the middle while still playing Sterling and Sturridge in their preferred roles.
4-2-3-1 can't be an option again. Gerrard won't succeed in a 2-man midfield. It also plays Henderson out of position.
4-3-3 forces Coutinho wide, unless you sit him and start Markovic.
This is all assuming Can or Allen is fit to start alongside Gerrard.

I'm expecting a 4-3-3 with a proper midfield trio of Gerrard, Henderson, and Allen. It does suck to Coutinho wide, but I think it's a safe formation.
3-5-2 is interesting. Who is your back 3?

What's City been playing wth, 2 strikers?

That's when many say 3 at the back is most effective... I don't mind the formation at all, but think we'll see something similar to last week...
I agree, I don't like Hendo as a RM...

Yea, one of the reasons a 3-5-2 vs Swansea was poor tactics from United imo. I get it puts their best players in their best positions, but 3 CBs vs one striker is a waste..

Aguero should be close to full fitness by next week. Maybe they go 2 up top again, maybe they go 4-2-3-1. Not really sure

You think he throws Moreno off the deep end in the Etihad?

I hope so. I'd rather put a desk at LB than Johnson again

I'd be a bit nervous starting the game with three at the back but feel, if we have prepared it, it could be a good in game move once subs start happening.
I think it has to be a 4-3-3. Allen or can - probably Allen. Everything else the same.
As for Lucas , it may be that he can spell Gerard some this year. I don't know if he's good enough in that role though and we would certainly miss his ability to spray the ball around.
But Lucas and Stevie should not be on the field at the same time anymore. That pressing stat is very telling.

What five would you put in the midfield in a 3-5-2?
-------Skrtl-Lovren-Sakho
Manquillo-Hendo-Gerrard-Moreno
-----------Coutinho
-------Sterling-Sturridge?

Thoughts on the balotelli links? I honestly feel like he is the best buy we can make at this point, especially for the money. He's a strong physical presence, PL proven, can hold up play and is very clever with the ball. And, of course, he can put the ball in the back of the net and is perfectly capable of leading the line in the absence of Sturridge. The only real downside I see is his ego and attitude problems, which of course can be a big one, but if he can be kept under control I think it would be a fantastic signing.
