We have to be one of the worst run clubs when it comes to trsnsfers... from Ayre now to Edwards...
At last with £60mm available we should be able to get a top CB.. but he was perfect for us and wanted to come here...
Southampton is also kind of stupid for not just taking the money...

Actually, the more I read the more I am confused. Can someone explain to me what the hell happened really? Thank you in advance.

Finally agree to pay up.
Finally beat out City and Chelsea money bags to a player we all want
And we screw it up. Only Liverpool.
I'm starting to think the amateur hour needs to sell the club at this point. Either appoint someone who knows what they are doing or sell the club.
Main issue from what I'm reading - Southhampton didn't enjoy so many of the details being linked to the press about him choosing Liverpool, klopp meetings, etc. The "tapping" happens all the time, but no reason for it to be publicized and rubbed in their noses. So basically we were screwed for leaking so many details to the press and letting them run with it before it was finalized.
He'll probably head to City now, and @#$#@ us in the league twice a year for the next 8 years.

1. We spoke to VvD before making an official bid and obtaining Southampton's go ahead. Which is considered "tapping up" and is against the league's transfer regs.
2. But that's ok. Because all clubs tap up other players all the time. And VvD spoke to Citeh and Chelshits too.
3. But someone at the club went ahead and leaked all the deets to the press before even contacting Southampton and lodging that pesky little bid.
4. Southampton got pissed because they felt like we were trying to force their hand to sell for below their asking price and were messing with the player's head.
5. They threaten to release information to the league and in press about Klopp personally tapping up VvD and reporting us to the league. Which could bring a fine and a docking of points but more importantly might drag Klopp through the media ringer. They also put a 75 mn pound price tag on VvD. They are super pissed at us.
6. Club now need to get out of a hard spot and issue an apology to Southampton blaming "press leaks" and say they have ended all interest presumably with the understanding from Southampton that they won't officially report us to the league if we issue an apology.
Tl:DR we have absolute morons running the press relations at the club.

That about sums it up perfectly. I'm pretty pissed - at myself too. I've been around long enough to not bother getting my hopes up.

Your TLDR is perfect... How do I sign up for that job? I mean it's what I do right now, just not for a soccer club

Thank you, I was more informed than I figured. I simply cannot believe this....thanks again though.

Beyond me mate. Don't have the faintest. I'm a consultant and I do negotiations between industry and government agencies. First rule of business: Except if legally required, everything is confidential. Don't disclose anything to anyone ever. Even if there is no way for anyone to renege.
I cannot believe a multi-million dollar enterprise cannot conduct negotiations in private.

If not it will be difficult for us to convince any player to negotiate in private, through his agent or otherwise, and all clubs will take us to the cleaners with every transfer fee we pay. Never mind the PR shite storm.
This was supposed to be a calm summer with some serious work rebuilding the team. We need to make a couple of solid deals ASAP to get things back on track. Don't want this to hang over the rest of the window.

I'm not as doom and gloom as some. We've gutted S'hampton and they had enough. This was bound to happen. They needed to stop us picking off their players and they went this route. Smart on their part. As far as LFC is concerned, we dabbled in the dark arts and got caught. Its happened to Chelsea and United. Part of the danger of swinging moneybags around.

Craig Burley believes Liverpool's "no interest" is rubbish and that VVD still ends up playing at Anfield.
