I want to continue watching soccer between now and the start of qualifying for 2018's World Cup. Being in Louisiana, it's not like there are any MLS teams to root for. Do I just "pick a team" in the EPL or UEFA Champions League and become a fan for no reason? Do I just forget about soccer until qualifying starts up again? What do I do?

Just keep watching. You don't really need to pick a team if you don't want to. I actually have more fun watching when I don't have a rooting interest. There is plenty to watch. If you have Bein sports, NBCSN, ESPN and some others, you are basically covered.

We need to a TV thread sometime before the season starts going over the channels and what leagues they have rights to and when the games are typically on.

Go through the guide on your TV. If you see soccer, watch it.

Rugby? We're American Soccer fans but we're not THAT far off the reservation.

The WC is over, that means it's on to

There are international friendlies this year and beyond. Copa America in 2016. Many international leagues, though pretty much only epl on cable without extended packages. MLS has some pretty great matches.

I just watch soccer. I have no club team other than the Jesters. I will drop everything to watch my yanks play tho.

The best thing about picking an EPL team is that you are literally picking a team that suits all of your interests, rather than picking a team by default because of location.

I would say to just watch this season without bias, learn which teams you favor/hate (likable players, rowdy fans, etc.)and pick a team towards the end of the season. There's no better feeling than rooting a team that fits with your own personal preferences.

Follow the Americans. Don't just arbitrarily pick a team. The team will pick you.

If you can't watch the sport without a rooting interest, you're not really a fan of the sport, IMO...

To be fair, don't pick a team in the bottom half or with awesome young talent. I loved Southampton last season and that team will only field a couple staters from last year. Too much volatility in those situations.

No offense, but why not pick a MLS team? The MLS is a fast growing league that is expanding the number of teams and improving talent. There are some exciting teams to watch.

If you get a chance I highly suggest going to New Orleans and checking out a Jesters game. Tickets are very cheap and the team is well run with some pretty good soccer being played.

Their season runs from April through early July.

Just watch soccer. I don't know why everyone needs to "pick a team" right off the bat (or ever).

I think it helps some people. Maybe it's how we're programmed, but especially for newcomers, how interested can you be about the transfer window if you don't have an interest? To me, that takes time. If I hadn't been a baseball fan my whole life, telling me Lester just got traded to the A's wouldn't mean anything. I love and respect baseball, but that still doesn't mean I watch random games between non-Braves teams very often. Maybe that means I don't appreciate the game as much as some diehard folks do, but who cares, it's how I like to enjoy it.

Soccer is so huge that it can be intimidating to try and dive in without focusing on a team or league. I think in time some folks who randomly pick will see their rooting interest fade as they just appreciate the entirety of the game more, but that's fine too.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to get interested or become a fan. It's all supposed to be fun, so do what is fun for you.
