MLS in St Louis?

While in New York to meet with Grubman, Peacock also met with MLS commissioner Don Garber to gauge the soccer league’s interest in using a new Rams stadium as the home venue for an MLS expansion franchise. The MLS prefers soccer-specific stadiums but isn’t set on that. The MLS teams in Seattle and New England are housed in NFL stadiums. And the Falcons’ new stadium in Atlanta also will serve as the home for an MLS expansion franchise.
May not be as much of a pipe dream as I though just a couple months ago. Seems like feelers are going out towards the MLS from the local group here in St Louis thats spearheading the new stadium plan.
Dave Peacock, ex AB executive who has been tapped by the MO governor to head the new stadium group for the Rams, is fairly well regarded in professional sports circles so this is serious interest on the part of the St Louis group.
I know this is very preliminary but It thought I would share as St Louis could very well be a darkhorse for MLS expansion at this point.

I could see that. The keepers could really run with the whole "Hands Up, Don't Shoot!" thing.

Sometimes you just have to go with it. What do you all think about this though? This is more than just "talk" Peacock is a legit player, both locally here in ST Louis as well as nationally with the powers in all the major professional sports leagues.
There has long been the rumor that part of keeping the Rams here would be getting an MLS franchise to also play in a new stadium. I always kind of chuckled about that and really didnt give it much likelihood of happening but with the revelations that Peacock is heading the stadium effort a couple months ago and this further revelation that he actually met with Garber, well, that gives me more hope than I have had in a long long time.
If a stadium is built from the beginning with dual purpose soccer/football in mind it can be done right.

St. Louis is a huge soccer city. I think, if they don't try to force it on people, they'd have amazing support. We've seen how well SKC has done. I think St. Louis could support a MLS franchise in the future. That said, I don't like the idea of sharing a stadium. I know it's obviously helpful in terms of money, but I think it'd have to really be designed with the sport in mind. Otherwise, in a few years, they'll start talks about a soccer-specific stadium anyway.

I agree completely. Im not a fan of using NFL stadiums in the MLS. That said, the only new dual purpose stadium being built with soccer in mind is Atlanta and possibly St Louis. I guess we will have to see how it plays out and what the atmosphere will be like.
I think St Louis would be good for the MLS and I know the MLS would be good for St Louis. There are just tons of multi generational soccer families and built in support just lying in wait here.
Oh well, just thought I would get some input from this board. Lots of great posters and insight here.

It seems that St. Louis is finally getting a serious bona fide ownership group with financial backing in place. Still, it seems that Sacramento, Minnesota, and Las Vegas may be further along and ahead in the line. I think that it is highly possible that St. Louis could get a club in the future but I do not think that it will be near future...more like 10 years from now.

Do you think that if a St Louis effort got its "ducks" in a row fairly quickly as this Rams stadium situation comes to fruition that they could move up in priority?
Just seems to me that St Louis, with a legitimate effort, could and should move ahead of Sacramento and Las Vegas.
Maybe I have those "homer" glasses on.

Personally, I don't think Las Vegas is going to be the best market. I'll be happy if I'm wrong, but honestly, I'd rather see a market like St. Louis get a team before Vegas. St. Louis has stuck with some pretty bad teams over the years (along with some pretty good ones, too).

St Louis is America's first soccer town. How it wasn't an MLS original city baffles me.

I think so. Garber has stated several times before that MLS needs a club in St. Louis although it has been a few years since he last voiced that sentiment. He has acknowledged that the area is the heart of soccer in the country and it would fit perfectly between Chicago and KC.
I'm not a huge fan of Vegas getting a club. Sacramento seems to be coming along really well and I know MLS would like to put another club in NoCal as a rivalry to San Jose. I would think St. Louis could be very close to Minnesota in terms of making progress.
Garber has said explicitly that he wants another team in the midwest. So it will probably come down to either Minnesota or St. Louis.
