nothing is a slam dunk but Austin's chances are incredibly slim and its mainly to do with the fact that SA already has their stadium ready to expand to MLS standards while Austin doesn't even have a location or funding for one signed off on.
I think there is a better chance of a team getting put somewhere between Austin and SA than Austin getting their own team.

The funding is not an issue. The location is, at least it is right now. MLS is giving Austin every opportunity to figure it out. That's why SA hasn't been announced. A lot of people are taking for granted that SA will get the team but that just isn't necessarily true. If Austin is able to put together a good proposal and have a stadium ready by 2020 it has the edge over SA. Austin is the biggest city in the country without a major pro team, growing at an incredible rate and eventually will be a bigger and better market than SA. MLS knows this and they also know that whichever league gets to Austin first will have a leg up.

I wished we had a promotion/relegation system. I know it likely won't happen but it's the only fair way to give every city a chance to have a team in the top league.

That would be cool but the infrastructure just doesn't exist here for it and the specter of potential relegation would scare off at least some potential investors.

travel man it would bankrupt some of these teams for sure
Its not like europe when even first division teams take a 3 hour train ride.
i would love a relegation system but the size of the country hinders it just like it hinders away fan travel other than local derby games.

I wish the NASL would agree to be the 2nd division and end the foolishness. I want to see the Rowdies in MLS but there's already the aforementioned logjam of potential teams. Plus I don't really think MLS can do with any more. The product is diluted enough...

Congrats to Atlanta. Seemed like that was one of the major goals of the new stadium, but cool to see it happening. I do wonder how successful they will be. Aside from the Braves the city does have a hard time with fan support.

Sorry to burst all of y'alls bubble, but Atlanta puts the league (with Miami) at 23 out of the 24 that we're stopping at for the near future. So there's only one spot left, and even that spot isn't for sure going to Texas. In fact, the frontrunner at this point is Minnesota...and Sacramento is thrown in there as well.

Next to no chance that they stop at 24. That number was simply a ploy to create urgency for prospective owners. If Sacramento, San Antonio, Austin, Indy or whoever want in the league, are willing to write the check and have a place to play that is approved by the MLS Board of Governors, they will get in. The 24 number did do one thing very well. It let MLS know where the next expansions will come from when they go to 28.

This will ultimately FAIL big time! Atlanta fans suck, hell they don't support their best sporting teams in the city. The Braves attendance sucks, Hawks sucks, Falcons(only when winning)sucks! Now SOCCER, really? The stadium is gorgeous but it won't last.

Eventually, you are correct. But Garber has already said they're going to settle on 24 for awhile. The league has been taking baby steps to this point, and I see no reason to throw all that work away by adding 8 teams in that short amount of time.
