You best believe MLS and LigaMX are going to push for him to play to get eyeballs on the tournament since it's the first one.

As of right now they have Pizzaro, Gregore, and the shell of Josef Martinez. They just brought in Martinez and Gregore is their captain. It's impossible they fit Messi, Busquets, and Suarez without breaking the DP rules unless they are buying down one of the current 3 or those three take huge pay cuts.

Messi’s new club had to have the refs rig the match to beat a USL squad tonight.

Here’s the amazing in-the-box save from one of Miami’s defenders in the 1st half. Really stretched for it!

The amount of frickery that is about to happen is going to be insane. Messi fanbois going to cream themselves when they shoot up the table bc PRO gets the memo to not let them lose.

I mean, the match official drug them into a cup semifinal (a match Messi could presumably play in) the day the Messi news broke.

Seeing as Real is my favorite team, I've hated Messi long before this. Of course Orlando City is my second favorite soccer team and he is now going to our rival. Even more reason to hate him.

On top of all that, MLS has bent over backwards to break the rules for certain teams and it is bullshite. Either enforce the rules or take the financial gloves off and let the owners sink or swim.

I’m hoping (and thinking) this whole thing will lead to a significantly increased salary cap for the league, but they might just do more frickery with added DP spots.

Why do you think all of the MLS clubs have agreed to pitch in financially for Messi to play in their league?

I don't like all the clubs pitching in for him in theory, but understand the business side of it.

My objection will be how they fit Suarez and Busquets in the team if those rumors are true. As it stands they have all 3 DP slots filled. From reading about their roster construction, Gregore was already bought down to TAM but listed as a DP to fill the slot until they got a 3rd. Supposedly Pizzaro will be sold soon opening up a second. Josef got there in January so who knows his situation. Campana is going to age out of the young DP slot if I understand the rule correctly after this season, so he will need to be sold or kept on a non-DP slot.

It will be nearly impossible for them to meet the roster requirements if everything comes to fruition. Changing the rules to benefit them in the middle of this process would be what pisses me off.

If it were for Messi to have a cup of coffee in the MLS and then leave, I would be right with you but he is going to be invested in growing the league.

That's a fair argument and I agree with you, a lot of things are still in motion currently but I hope they do what is best for the league.

After thinking on this for a little while, wouldn’t all clubs have used up their DP spots at this point in the season? How would clubs normally pursue players with expiring contracts or looking to move after the Euro leagues have wrapped up?

They buy down the current contract to make it so that the player can fit in the salary cap restrictions and take away the DP tag. Requires some forethought from the front office to have the space available for it.
