Kind of divey. Many here would have called that a dive, were it another league, and-or player.

Pretty good no call, but that defender is pretty dodgey.

Maybe not dive, I guess embellished or accentuated, would be the better descriptor.

City looking pretty rough at the end of the half. Fernandinho is not playing well and we aren't getting it to Navas when he's had more space on the wing.

How's Dzeko looked? I read a stat that they've only had 3 shots.

I would have felt bad about it, but he was in fact standing in the box when he was clearly fouled.

Yep.

This has been a pretty good game, both teams have some really good players in the midfield. Paulinho is really impressive, imo.

this sounds dumb, but it doesnt matter in that situation. in theory, it "should have" been a penalty, but the ref did a good job to place it outside the box. no one wants to award a penalty for that, refs do that shite all the time.

Dzeko has been ok, had a chance for a header in the goal. He had a good pass from Yaya Toure that looked promising but just missed getting his foot on it.

Overall, City looks a little rougher than I was expecting.

Cardiff have been very compact and crowding out dzeko. He's had two guys on him most times and not received that much service

Shelvey has shown this half why I think it was a good decision to sell him...

There is not "in theory". It's in the damn rule book. If he blew his whistle for a foul, it should be a PK. No question about it.

it would be kind of ridiculous to give them a goal for a light foul way the hell out there regardless of the exact interpretation of the rulebook.

Maybe but my stance is generally that everyone knows a foul anywhere in the box, according to the rules, is a PK. Don't take the chance of committing a foul, especially if they aren't in a goal scoring position when inside the box. Even more, don't body check someone in the box while also missing the ball.

The penalty rule is flawed though, and a lot of refs recognize that. If players were called for fouls in the box on defending balls in the air with the same zeal they were when defending balls in the air outside of the box there would be like 5 pk's a game. Pk's have such an exaggerated impact on games, no one wants to see them given on plays that were never going to result in a goal

It wouldn't bother me at all to see a penalty given there. If you're going to be a fricking moron then you've got to deal with the consequences. It was obviously a foul.

It's taking some getting used to. I first thought that Paulinho had a bad first touch. Turns out he just knows that his first touch should be aggressive, something nobody did last year. I don't mind him losing it every once in a while in order to do this.

My position in a more succinct form.

The rule may be flawed, but as a ref myself, then his job is to call the game according to the rule book. We don't make the laws, we just enforce them.

it's a differing of opinions and it's fair to see it differently. it probably goes back to how individuals view penalties and even referees in general.
