Its to prevent teams from the same group colluding to manipulate who makes it through from that group. With all 4 teams playing at the same time the results for the last two games of the group are simultaneous.

Here is a good article on "why" this started. LINK

If they are playing for country pride I doubt many would be colluding... I mean right now France and Switzerland have the lead but if Romania totally annihilates Albania and Switzerland were to lose but several goals, they could sneak into the next stage correct?

The advancement scenarios are much more muddied this year in the Euros becasue they went from 16 teams to 24 this tournament which means 4 third place teams also make the round of 16.

I agree that the days of something like that have mostly past but its a holdover from an era where that type of thing did happen. Much less likely to happen in this day in age but you never know. World soccer is pretty corrupt.

That leads to Ronaldo missing on purpose

I think France/Switzerland ends in a draw so both advance regardless of what happens in the other games.

IIRC, Sweden - Denmark's nil-nil affair in Euro 2004 exemplified collusion.

It was 2-2, but yeah...I remember Denmark's effort on Sweden's equalizer in the dying minutes was missing? Yeah, we'll say missing.

Want to drink so hard but chemo tomorrow. Probably shouldn't. Probably. My give-a-frick-o-meter might change.

HIC...huh...waaaaaaa

Last night, some friends and I did Cuervo shots each time that Chile scored, then 2 more after the game ended. Thank God that we were smart enough to have a designated driver.

I'm just wondering if things could have been done better. It's weird that Italy are the only country that has locked it's group and sitting there in the knockout waiting to play a tough runner up in group D while ex. Germ/Poland group winner will play a 3rd place team. It's odd.

A bit awkward that the third-placed teams have to sit around waiting, maybe training, and possibly for nothing. Normally they'd be on the golf courses or smashing hot European puss in the Spanish islands almost immediately.

Though if a 3rd-placed team is on 4 that's got to be a super high probability of advancing.

Fun fact: In the 3 World Cups that had this format, no third-place teams qualified for the last 16 having lost 2 of 3 games.

Bud heavy and slow baking some chicken wings right now. My own little seasoning with sweet baby rays on top of that
