This is one of those scandals that is so obvious that it isn’t even a scandal. Everyone knew that Man City and PSG were in violation of FFP. Johnny Baby gave them very soft fines but the only thing that’s really new in the leaks is how little they were officially fined. Now teams know they can spend 30 million in lawyers, act hard and get a 20 million euro fine.
The losers in this are Turkish and Russian teams that actually followed the rules or got close to it. The main difference is that in order to get by with a 20 million euro fine and a 30 million euro legal bill , you have to spend 250-300 million Euros on your team. 45-50 million is not enough. It’s the epitome of too big to fail in sports. Man City and PSG are Goldman, Citi, and Morgan Stanley.
Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, CSKA, and Zenit are like the small banks and hedge funds that had a guy go to jail or get banned for life from the securities industry. No one hit the middle spot to be Lehman or Bear Sterns. That would have made things interesting.
I doubt the level of outrage in this article moves the needle very far. The Arabs are certainly brazen though.

City was a yo-yo club it’s history was getting promoted to the first division then going back down.
Come on man, you know City’s history is more than that. We won plenty of trophies early in the club’s existence, but yeah for most people probably alive today City spent more time out of the top division than in it and struggled in terms of success. But to say there is ‘no history at all’ is just ridiculous.
quote:
PSG doesn’t have any real history as it’s not even 50 years old and was never a power until it’s owners came around.
PSG are a newer club, yes, but they were a force in the 90’s and early 2000’s and have attracted high profile players for years now. Not nearly the talent they have today, but still relevant in world soccer.
I mean shite, they had George Weah in their books when he won the ballon d’Or.

Everyone knew our Etihad naming deal, which was what originally caused all of the FFP discussion, was completely ridiculous when it was announced. But now the 10-year, £400 mil deal is very reasonably in line when compared to United’s 7-year, £559 mil contract with Chevy. And that is for shirt only, the Etihad money is for top and stadium. Leicester’s late owner literally did the exact same thing with their shirts and the King Power stadium. But because they didn’t spend nearly as much as City in the transfer market and don’t have a cross town rival like United, nobody ever cries about their shady doings.
No City fan can sit here and say that the beginning of the decade wasn’t shady as shite in terms of how the club did it’s accounting. But that has all changed and the club is very healthy financially.
Almost all of the whining comes from supporters of other big clubs across Europe. Your Barca, Real, Juventus, United, Arsenal, Liverpool supporter’s all cry foul when City’s financials are questioned, or the owners are mentioned. It’s the old club not wanting a so-called ‘yo-yo club’ threatening their share of the world market. City aren’t supposed to be as big and as good as they are and so they’ll whine non-stop at any chance they can get.

Comparing deals that United and City have is just being dishonest as frick
United is one of the biggest brands in all of sports and Chevy is a foreign company wanting to use this brand for their advertising
City isn’t one of the biggest brands in football especially when the Etihad deal happened. The deal was a self sponsorship deal well above market value. City despite having the best coach and one of the best teams in the world still struggle to generate organic revenue and fill their stadium.
You can’t compare the two

Yes, I understand this and I’m not even trying to say they are even remotely close in terms of a brand. City will never get close to what United, Real, Barca, etc...are as a business.

That’s what I said. It was a laughable figure at the time. But six years down the road when compared to other sponsorship deals in the league City aren’t even in the top 3 in the league. United, Arsenal and Chelsea all make more per season.
I’m not arguing that City should be making more, i’m just saying that deal is likely fair value now if not undervalued.

But the deal wasn’t cut recently
At the time it was a Shady which is the entire issue

According to a batch of alleged hacked emails by whistle blowers Football Leaks reported in Der Spiegel, claims have been made that Sheikh Mansour picked up the tab for large parts of agreements with club sponsors as part of attempts by City officials to comply with Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Doubts over the authenticity of the deals, with companies based in the Sheikh's Abu Dhabi homeland, have long been raised - and, if proved to be genuine, a series of messages suggests all may not be as it seems.
quote:
In 2010, one of the allegedly hacked emails reportedly from board member Simon Pearce, communicating with bosses, allegedly discusses a £15m deal with partner Aabar. 'As we discussed, the annual direct obligation for Aabar is £3m,' he allegedly wrote. 'The remaining £12m requirement will come from alternative sources provided by His Highness.'
Der Spiegel say that single sentence confirms accusations that Sheikh Mansour personally paid a portion of sponsorship money.
quote:
In another allegedly hacked message, City's chief financial officer, Jorge Chumillas, allegedly wrote that the club was facing a £9.9m shortfall to comply with FFP thanks to the contract termination of sacked former manager Roberto Mancini.
Mancini was sacked in 2013, a year to the day after winning the Premier League title. His giant pay-off meant yet more expenditure on City's books that had to be covered by income under UEFA rules.
He adds: 'I think that the only solution left would be an additional amount of AD (Abu Dhabi) sponsorship revenues that covers this gap.'
According to the report, Chumillas goes on to suggest sponsors Etihad pay an extra £1.5m, Aabar £0.5m and the tourism authority £5.5m.
quote:
In a further reported email exchange, it is alleged Chumillas asks Pearce if they can change the date of payment from Abu Dhabi sponsors. Pearce responds: 'Of course, we can do what we
want.'
quote:
Der Spiegel go on to allege that City's financial reports are 'a web of lies'. They say that in another email Pearce allegedly writes that stadium and jersey sponsor Etihad Airways 'direct contribution remains at a constant £8m' which does not appear to tally with the actual obligation of £35m.The publication claims that annually, the deal was worth £67.5m but say that Chumillas is alleged to have written to Pearce: 'Please note that out of those £67.5m, £8m should be funded directly by Etihad and 59.5 by ADUG.' ADUG stands for the Abu Dhabi United Group – City's ownership vehicle.
quote:
The report ends by alleging that internal City calculations noted that by May 2012, when the club won the Premier League, a total of £127.5m had been used to supplement Abu Dhabi partnership deals.
