Sunderland did it a few years in a row I think. You can't flirt with relegation for several seasons though as it will eventually get you

Last year 2015/16- they were bouncing between 19th and 20th all season long then only lost one match in their final 11 (3 wins, 1 loss, 7 draws). They finished 17th.
and
2013/14 they were 20th place and won 4 of their final 5 to finish 14th.

I think the crazy one was when they beat us at the Bridge (Jose's first ever loss there) when we had to win our last 4 or 5 and we would have been champs. Right before the Gerrard slip game.
