Hodgson started Sterling in the middle instead of Rooney against Italy because of how badly Rooney neglected Pirlo during Euro 2012

You're right. 3-man vs 4-man back lines are now 8-2-1
Not quite. 8-3-0. FIFA technically rules the match to have ended in a draw with team to advance decided by PKs. It's a technicality, but it does save the stat.

Colombia has already looked like 1 of the best teams in the WC..... but imagine if Colombia had a healthy Falcao. Would be scary good.

And how good of a job did Sterling do that game? Pirlo was superb.
If you don't remember, Rooney was the lone striker against Italy in Euro 2012. Ashley Young was positioned behind him, if my memory serves me. Asking you're lone striker to defend a DLP is a quick way of not doing anything offensively, which England didn't.
Or maybe they set up as a 4-4-2 with Rooney and Welbeck together. I can't remember.

Who would you take off though? Colombia's 2 strikers have been good this WC.

I thought Sterling was one of England's best players against Italy

Yes they have been good. But Falcao is 1 of the best strikers in the world. You dont leave Falcao on the bench.

Pitbull just laid a good hit.

But he did about as good a job as Rooney marking Pirlo. In that he didn't mark him well at all. Pirlo was excellent that game.
