and he should certainly make our World Cup team, and perhaps be a starter?
Starting? I don't know, I've never seen him play. But it's not like we have a surplus of young talented forwards on clubs like Bayern. When the options off the bench are Wondo, EJ, and Green, I'll take the 17 year old who has played first team minutes for Bayern Munich.

Green does have a lot more potential. Wondo and EJ are just going to start declining at their ages.

I'll take the guy who's scoring first team goals anywhere - IDGAF if it's Wondo, Mike Magee, Juan Agudelo, Terrence Boyd or anyone else.
We don't need a player that's going to be good in 2016, 2018 or 2022, we need one to be good from June - July 2014.
Anyway, my original point still stands - it's bush league to have guys bust their arse for the US team for four years, and get pushed aside for someone that's not playing first team football. That's been Klinsmann's push from day one. Play first team football. Start - play well - score goals. Remember when Michael Bradley wasn't playing for the US in 2011-12 because "he wasn't playing first team football?"
For someone like Sacha Kljestan (or Ale Bedoya or whoever), who *is* playing first team football, playing well, playing in Champions League.... if he gets left home for someone who's played one minute of first team football, and never scored a first team goal - that's chicken shite. Maybe all that changes in the spring, and he starts playing for Bayern and playing well.
I'm not arguing that Green might one day be better than a player like Kljestan.... he might (or probably will) be. But if he isn't one of the 23 best in June(using Klinsmann's own criteria), he shouldn't be on the plane to Brazil, and his being there undermines every word that comes out of Klinsmann's mouth.

I made a poor choice by using Kljestan. I should have said "_________________."
Any player who is following Jurgen's "rules" would be shite on by taking a youth academy/non-first team player.
And I disagree on Kljestan. If he's not player #22 (assuming Rimando is #23), he's wildly close to that cutoff. Player #22 is probably the one to get bumped if you add a player from outside of the pool, regardless of position.

I didn't say he should start. I think for the future of the national team, he should be offered a spot over whoever else has been our last striker. He's talented enough to help us out now. You're not comparing apples to apples when you're comparing his first team chances with Eddie Johnson's

I agree to a certain extent, but international managers have to consider the present and the future. It may be "chicken shite" but let's pretend Green becomes a world class player. Do you want to be the manager that let him get away because you wanted to honor the commitment of a fringe player? No offense to those guys, they're 10x the player I ever was/could be, but international soccer is a business. Securing the future of a position is a reasonable decision if the person you're "screwing" is essentially your team's past. Just my $0.02, FWIW.

I know. I thought I saw someone say that upthread.
Anyway, if between now and June, he gets on the field with senior players at the club and country level and he looks like belongs, I say sure - bring him.
But promising a World Cup roster spot (if that even happened) to a guy with one minute of non-youth action is his career seems a little silly.
We already have a guy that was a world beater (at the youth level) if we ever need one.

Landon Donovan?

quote:i get what you are saying, but Green is a guy who you can't pass up. And look at how many of the 23 guys on the squad actually play in the WC, so if he takes one guys spot like a Wondo who wouldn't even play, what is the difference.

Usually all of them play, at some point - except for the GKs.
There might be one guy that doesn't.

He's on Bayern 2, not in the youth academy, with 15 goals in 18 games. He got a pro contract with the best team in the world. It's not like he's a U-18 player for Cardiff City.

But that's the Bayern reserve team, right? That plays in the 3rd division against other reserve teams, right?
Are there other nations considering placing players on their World Cup roster from this league?
Again, I'm not knocking his talent - I'm just saying..... frick it - never mind.

also a couple other guys to watch out for that is gonna get talked about are
Gedion Zelalem-is with Arsenal may make the switch at 18 so he can keep playing with Arsenal
Junior Flores-joins dortmund next month when he turns 18.

Yes. I'm not saying the reserve team is some great accomplishment, but it's not the youth squad.

I don't know, I don't really care much about other nations.

I know what you're saying. What I'm saying is that he's probably already better than Eddie Johnson. Jürgen will be able to see if that's the case. If it is, then I don't really if it hurts anyone's feelings if he's chosen.
It also helps us out a lot in the long run if he pans out.
I've been saying that he's not a finished product and he still fricks up in front of goal a lot (from when I get the chance to see him) but his talent and potential shouldn't be discounted because Freddy Adu turned out to be terrible.

We know about Zelalem. I doubt he plays for us.

I don't think we'll lose Flores. El Salvador is his other choice.

I can't speak for the situation in Germany, but it's not unheard of to have players on the pseudo-independent reserve teams of huge clubs play for their national teams, e.g., Denis Cheryshev and Russia. It's an entirely different situation than other players in their respective divisions or even reserve teams from clubs that are merely large.
I agree with you wrt Juergen's treatment of some of the players in the pool, but there will always be situations at the World Cup that will be tailored to the enthusiasm of an inexperienced, but super talented, young player. If he can fill that role, I don't really see the problem with bringing him in. If he'll just be brought along as a tourist, then I agree that it'd be pretty pointless.

This situation isn't a new one. Didn't England take Theo to the WC at 17 on potential alone? He probably took someone's spot that was a key player in helping them qualify, but game changing, individual talents like Walcott or Green (if that's what he can be for us), can make a real difference in a tight, low scoring tournament game.
