One time I thought I'd be slick and asked a British patient from the Birmingham area who he supported in football ... He said the Dolphins(i live in s. Fla)

I don't usually call it football, but the people who play it are called footballers bc soccer players doesn't have the same ring to it. Nothing wrong with saying keeper, they're called goalkeepers. Nothing wrong with saying boots either. Baseball players call their shite spikes, same concept.

I always call it soccer but I don't really care if someone else refers to it as "football." I always find this topic amusing though.
If an American ran into a Brit watching an NFL game at Wembley and they referred to the field as the "pitch" that American would lose their shite. "Its not a pitch, its a field! Say it right!" Boots instead of cleats, same thing. Kits instead of jerseys....you get my point. Americans would call them out on it.
How is that any different than us adopting their terms to describe their game? If anything, we should follow what the British use more often. Its their game. Just as 99% of American's would expect of the British when talking about our version of football.

I just hear "football" so much that it's almost ingrained into my vocab now. When I'm talking to people who don't watch it at all I'll call it soccer but when I'm in a convo or discussion with another obvious fan of the game then football just feels natural.
Like when phrases it sounds so much more natural.
"They are playing good football right now" "team X is all about high press football". Using soccer just sounds odd to me now. I'm not pretentious about it, and never would I call anyone out on their terms used. Quickest way to turn sidewalk fans away is to be douchey and exclusive acting about our great sport.
