Exactly. That back line was decent with those 2. Without them, who knows.

Like I said, we'll have more opportunities than we did vs Ghana. Just gotta put them away.

Do any of our attackers scare them? I would think no.

Portugal will counter with more danger and precision. It won´t be that bomb forward fest with no plan.

Midfield, like always will be key. Above all, keeping posession, albeit naïve, but keeping it, just over the center half.

CRon will spring diagonally, and I don´t care who´s out there, Portugal can do a better job of placing balls than Ghana can....

Also, I hope Jermaine Jones realizes he doesn´t need to have a Ghana match here, but a tactical one. Very, very important.

but it is more about opportunities than our talent

if they don't play they're usual sit back/counter style and they DO press hard...that LB is going to be major and we should have plenty of counter attacking opportunities

Probably not. That's the beauty of our squad though. We don't really have any individual that scares anyone. When we play well its as a unit. You can't really key on one guy and shut us down.

Hell Bradley is arguably our best player and he played like shite against Ghana and we still won.

I also think that Bradley and Jones will have more space to operate against the less athletic Meireles and Veloso.

Muntari and Jordan Ayew pressured our midfield extremely well on Monday.

Meireles is a huge weak link for me, at this stage in his career.

At this level it is. We have to be clinical with our chances, and not give Ronaldo any easy chances.

In some ways, I think this works to our advantage. Ghana just peppered us with crosses. No game plan but "frick it. Cross it." You can't prepare or plan for the game they played. With Portugal we can at least have some ideas.

Dempsey and probably Bacon have better resumes than those two defenders.

I am certainly not saying we are favorites. Depending on Ronaldo, our most likely outcome could be a loss. However, this is the best I have felt about this team getting points against Portugal since the day of the draw.

All of this is despite our team playing poorly against Ghana. I just think Portugal has become a train wreck in a matter of days.

Yup. Doubt we see that Sunday.

I don't think we have a bad midfield. They just played a really poor game against Ghana.

4-5-1 Formation

Transform into 4-3-3 on counters

This gives the US it's best chance as Portugal will probably be aggressive to get the 3. You have to have speed on outside with guys who can operate in space. If our problem is a striker who can't hold the ball then this is an appealing formation.

He's gotten a fair share of criticism on here, but he's much more than a goal poacher for San José. John Terry of all people gave him the glowing reviews after chasing him during the MLS All Star game.
You'll get little or no love for Wondo on this board, but with Portugal's obvious need to press and put up points, I won't be surprised if JK needs his or Mix or Zuzi's creativity off the bench to win or draw this match.

Portugal will not press us nearly as high and we'll have a lot more possession.

In fact, Portugal would love for us to be so comfortable in possession for periods of time, that some of our defenders move up the pitch....

I'm going to have to disagree here

Their team is built to run and press while being able to keep the ball. We are not built to break them down while keeping the ball. Keeping possession is pointless unless its positive possession. If we have it for extended periods of time they will just sit back and dare us to break them down in a normal situation. So if they did go up on us and they bunkered down we would have trouble.

They will need to keep possession while pushing forward b/c this is a must win for them. Even if we tried to keep possession they would press us right away to win the ball back. Sitting back and letting us keep possession does them no good b/c they are not playing for a draw. They will want to keep the ball esp in our third and when they turn it over jump right back all over us.

We need to play a high line and press them with constant pressure causing mistakes then capitalize on the counter. They will be the ones bringing their defenders up and we need to take advantage of that with pressing and forcing them to play the ball back to their defenders already up the field.

We need to play a high line

Nani and CR drool about this.

While I think it could work well (and am very tempted to buy in), it would be a very dangerous approach that could really backfire. If it worked, it would work tremendously well. If it didn't, CR scores 3. Fortune may favor the bold, or kill it.

I'd rather not play a high line, but flood the midfield to keep and retain possession and keep them from doing anything too creative there. I think our midfield could match up to theirs fairly well.

If that happens, we'll make their only offense punt and hope CR can beat our guys. And if we're not playing a high line, I think we're capable of keeping him from finding too much space.

I do think that they will try to draw us out a bit to create space for their counters, but the longer the game goes on, their desperation for 3 points will start to force more action. If we can be patient, we should find plenty of scoring opportunities at that point. Of course, thats very dependent upon us keeping them from scoring for the first 30 or so minutes.

ETA -

I also think that Portugal is nothing like Ghana and we will have a lot more time and space to operate in the midfield.

Add to that the conditions in the jungle - if Portugal start expending too much energy pressing and chasing us (and us not spend it pressing and high-pressing them), I think we could score 1 or 2 late.

I think most people are underrating Portugal big time because of one awful game. I felt fairly confident against Ghana (before I knew about Atsu). I am just very hopeful for a draw. Not having Coentrao and Pepe as well as likely not 100% Ronaldo gives a better chance to get a result, but I still think it is unlikely.

You do realize they will not let us have possession if we do not press them it will be a long long game. You are delusional if you think we will maintain possession and force them to play kickball esp in a must win game for them.

That so called advantedge people thought we have with the climate is a myth.

I don't think people are underestimating Portugal - I think people realize that it is a much better match-up for us than Ghana was. We just don't have the technical ability to beat Ghana's pressure very well, especially without Jozy.

Portugal is an entirely different animal, and our athleticism and approach should serve us fairly well.

We are NOT as good as they are player to player. But at this stage, being a cohesive team that plays well together can overcome that disadvantage. Portugal has struggled from qualifying to now, and you could see some of their issues against Germany well before the Red Card. If they come out pushing too hard for the goal (and the 3 points) and have a tantrum throwing CR, it'll work into our favor. There will be a lot of additional pressure on them, and they weren't handling it well to start with.

ignore the climate

we're more fit than they are. if they go insane pushing and running early on they MUST score or they will blow their loads by the 60th minute

we need to sit back and withstand their attack early and push on counters only. if we can keep it 0-0, we should have plenty of opportunities to win late. we just have to be patient
