I just don't fear anyone on Portugal other than Ronaldo (and Joao Pereira to an extent). Nani has regressed terribly and their strikers are pretty useless. We've also played much better against Europeans than elsewhere under Jurgy. My big question is can we score?

And I also realize that a major part of their tactics is to pull us forward in our possession to create space for CR, Nani and their counters. Their press will be not nearly as physically aggressive as Ghanas was.

Agree with you here - but I'm not taking about our supposed advantage - I'm taking about their expending way more energy than us in that heat trying to press us, etc. If we both start with the same tank of gas and they drive 100 miles further than us, we'll have more in the tank 75 minutes in. If we try to press in that heat, I think it will go badly for us late in the game. Every team who has played there has complained about it.

For the most part they are not a counter attack team who allows the other team to hold the ball. Yes they have CR7 who did this playing under Jose at RM but thats not their primary game.
They press to get the ball right back b/c they want to maintain positive possession.
We need to press to force mistakes and counter with numbers.

I'd prefer to keep Mix on the bench and maybe give him 30 minutes late if we need a goal.
If he plays, he needs to play right behind a striker, as the No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1 or in a 4-4-1-1.

No its not their primary tactic, but they want it and crave opportunities to do it. I've never seen them press relentlessly and not give another team some comfort on the ball for stretches of the game. I don't see their every game (like the struggles against Israel or N. Ireland), but I have watched them quite a bit over the last 8 or so years between world cups, Euros, and some of the bigger qualifying games (and play-offs).
Now, maybe they will switch that up due to our inability to handle Ghana and their needing 3 points?
Otherwise, they wont press us relentlessly from the opening whistle like Ghana did. As the game goes on and if they haven't scored, they'll likely up the pressure on us as the pressure builds on them.

Their press =/= Our press
They like to pick teams apart by making runs while pushing forward. By us pressing them and playing a higher line we can jam those lanes up and break out on the counter faster than if we bunker down. Also it forces them to play the ball back not allowing the positive possession. We pretty much have to accept we are just not technical enough right now to maintain possession against the like of Portugal or Germany for extended periods of time.

Ronaldo's ability on the counter is entirely independent of Jose Mourinho. The "Real Madrid play negatively under Mourinho" narrative only persisted under Mourinho because of Mourinho's history, the Pepe experiments, people really only tuning in to watch Real Madrid against a team that valued possession over everything, and because Mourinho has the personality of a freight train. Ancelotti's done some of the same shite. He just isn't criticized, because he's not a dickhead (whether you find him endearing or not, Mourinho is still a dickhead). Ancelotti would love to play every game on the counter. It suits their personnel.

I agree with the first part of this, but not the second. Portugal is going to come out and try to put one away early so the first 15 is going to be even more important than usual. If they don't score the game is really going to open up and if the US continues to sit back the result is not going to be pretty.

I agree with this. When I was saying the US needs to be more positive on the attack this is more what I meant. They CANNOT just sit back and try to keep possession in the middle and defensive 2/3. They have to put Portugal under some pressure, but like someone said earlier it has to be smart pressure and not just press press press.
