Modern day knock out win by 2026 would you have believed me?
I thought for sure we would have a couple QF and maybe one of them to a semi appearance in the next 20 years.
Not really feeling like this is our year either.

I def wouldn’t have taken that.
Shows that our youth system, pay to play, and college system aren’t doing us any favors.
We struck lightning in a bottle in 02, and if that German bullshite handball is called, I think we reach the semis.
American teams, back then, were packed with underachievers who had a chip on their shoulders. This generation not so much.

I think we get a knockout win this year, but only because they added an extra round.
I have no reason to believe we'll break the quarterfinal ceiling. Which is a shame because when it was announced that we got the World Cup, it felt like we were building towards something special in the wake of the 2018 embarrassment.
Supposed golden generation was set to be in its prime led by the most talented player our country has ever produced plus the boost of playing at home. I mean, I guess it can still happen, but I don't feel great about the chances.
I do think it will be a failure if we don't make the quarterfinals this year. We can no longer hang our hat on "getting out of the group" as a benchmark considering more teams advance than get eliminated in the group stage now.

It’s quarterfinal or bust, and I’m sadly thinking it’s most likely a bust.

I’d say Mexico performing even worse over that period still helps that result.

I don’t feel much sense of pride or passion from this group. At one point that’s all we had, now we have additional dates on the calendar. Golden generation or not, we seem to have lost the personality and the moxie we used to thrive on.

Which is crazy because it looked like we had rediscovered it when this generation got over the hump with that gutsy 2021 Nations League win over Mexico.

Me when Wondo shanked a winning gimmie in the final seconds

I often think about that Wondo miss, but from the lens of how much would this board have melted down if he had scored that but the linesman called him offsides.
There was no VAR in that tournament and the flag was up, but he was at least three yards onside.

Was it though? I feel like the buildup of the team in the 90's created '02. '98 should have been like '02 but the team self-imploded due to off-field issues and a dumb coach tinkering with things last minute.

Have you listened to Roger Bennett's podcast series on the 98 team?
It's called American Fiasco and it's great. It came out like 8 years ago and I just did a relisten because I enjoyed it so much.

Yep. I believe someone, likely you, shared it here. I wasn't aware of any of that stuff until I listened to that podcast.

Yes.
Not many remember the whole thing (I had just graduated high school), but we got a lucky goal against Portugal and held on to win 3-2.
Tied South Korea.
Lost to Poland 3-1.
Advanced out of the group to meet Mexico, which had miraculously won their group with Croatia and Italy. Croatia lost to Mexico in the first match due to a straight red card early in the second half.

To be fair, Portugal got a lucky own goal as well. And got unlucky with a penalty against South Korea in South Korea.
Not to mention the fact that we got incredibly unlucky against Germany.
Sure, some things fell in our favor to reach the quarterfinals in 2002, but that team was just as skilled as it was lucky.
