I'm watching this game - Congo vs. Uzbekistan - and I just don't get it. I mean, these teams have already been mathematically eliminated. There's no way either one will get to be named the Undisputed Single Best Football team, and we all know that's what matters. We must play as many games as possible until we know with metaphysical certainty who the Single Best Football Team is, and any games that don't serve that exact purpose are trash.

And look at the unadulterated joy on the faces on those Congolese fans when they score. What's wrong with them? Don't they know that it's already impossible to win it all? Why don't they go to Wal-Mart and get a jersey for Argentina or Germany, so that they have a chance at basking in the television glory of the Single Best Football Team? Why just root for the loser country you actually come from?

And surely no one is getting wealthy on Congolese or Uzbek football apparel- what a wasted economic opportunity! I don't get it. Someone should really get Raycom or Jefferson Pilot or maybe even that fraudulent riverboat pilot guy with the three-ring binders a meeting with FIFA to straighten them out.

Come to America every 32 years.
Most profitable WC was up til now still 1994, despite the fact they added a lot more games since then and the US did not even have a pro soccer league at the time.
2026 is finally breaking the record

I thought they'd been mathematically eliminated, but even if that's not true we know neither of these teams is winning it all. They don't have the budget, facilities, or fanbase.

Is Howard Schnellenberger still around? I think he could talk some sense into these FIFA people. Maybe the really important countries that actually have a chance could split off and make their own super-league. You could call it "Soccer's Exemplary Coalition" or something.

I suggest watching the real game: Colombia v. Portugal.

Two quality teams, but more importantly, two scantily-clad fanbases full of beautiful women.

It’s fun to joke but the Americanization of soccer is absolutely coming. FIFA themselves wanted the game broke up in quarters in ‘94. They got the hydration breaks pushed through this time. They absolutely want that American market and they have no integrity to worry about violating to get there. Soccer doesn’t have to replace one of the big three. The country will just get big enough that it stands beside them. And then it will be over for the world

Shame they didn't allow tailgating.

Imagine how awesome the visiting fans would have found that.

You know this is the kind of thing that’s verifiable, right?

Like you don’t have to wing it with hot takes. You can check first

why do G5 teams play games in college football if they have less than .05% chance of winning a title?

Why do teams play bowl games if they aren't in the national championship?
