I'm really into history, so I picked Aston Villa as my PL team about a decade ago...
-Villa director William McGregor founded the football league in 1888
-The fourth most successful club in English history
-One of only 2 clubs to spend 100 years in the top flight
-One of 5 English clubs to be European champions
-Villa were Britain's only champions in baseball (yes baseball) in 1890 and they had 3 Americans playing for them

1. Becks plays for the USMNT. We were in the middle of friendlies and WC qualifying. Country > Club
2. CONCACAF Champions League. It's like the Champions League you may know, just with club teams in North America and the Caribbean. Teams can qualify by winning the MLS Cup, the Supporters Shield (regular season champion), MLS Cup runner-up, and the US Open Cup in the previous year.

I used to like River Plate because the Argentinian League was always on FoxSoccer.
But in the last few years, I've watch more Premier league and UCL than anything else. I just naturally gravitated towards Arsenal, don't really know why. Style of play, iconic coach, cool kit, cool name, lots of things. Plus they seem to broadcast a lot of their games in the US.
I watch MLS some too, but don't really have a favorite team.

That was my original thought but I don't think it would work so well for me. I'm a classic American mutt: Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland, France and Wales. I feel like these are not the biggest soccer countries.
I've been told to follow a Premier League team because it would be the easiest to do in the US.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm just getting into soccer and me and some of my friends are picking an EPL team to follow for next season. I went with Tottenham because I feel like they're good enough to be easy to follow without feeling too bandwagon. Also I liked their logo and my friend went with Arsenal so I wanted to go with a rival of theirs.

Honestly though? I'd say just wait to see which club picks up Clint Dempsey and go with them.

Here's a question, if English Premier league and soccer are so popular, why are the stadiums so small?

I'll be at OU this Fall and I was bummed that the stadium only fits 85,000 because I compare it to UT, A&M, LSU, Florida, Bama etc.

I was drawn to Liverpool Football Club by watching the EPL in general... Then the history of the club was really interesting and hooked me...

MLS is worth watching. It's not the EPL, but no other country besides Spain boast an equal level of football. Don't listen to Euro snobs. It's so much more important to watch games live as a new fan. RSL actually plays fairly good football.

A couple of reasons, first they tend to have more teams per capita. For example, London has like 7 teams that will play in the EPL this season plus a few more playing in the next division.
Secondly, sports just isn't as big a part of the fabric of society over there as it is here. The people who follow it are just as good a fans as we are here, but there is just a higher percentage of the population who doesn't care about sports or has a very very casual interest compared to the United States (especially the southern United States). It's just a different world over there.

It's good football, but it's typically harder to find on American TV without a Latino cable package.

This. I used to be a MLS hater, but now I can't get enough of it. It's not pretty, but it's highly competitive...and it's your home country!
P.S. US Open Cup is a competition among almost every organized team in America. Semi-pro and pro teams alike in a giant tournament. It's been around since the beginning of organized American soccer. Think FA Cup for America.
