Hell, if Chandler can play there, that's fine with me, too. Just find a way to play Lichaj and Chandler at the same time. They are a huge upgrade over Spector and Bornstein. And Cherundolo probably will be retired by the next World Cup. And as much as I like him, he and Bocanegra are too slow against elite competition.

From the article:

quote:

If this isn't the last time we see him turn out for the U.S., all conspiracy theories will become credible.

Hyperbole is all well and good (and this guy writes like a fan-boy, not a journalist... I feel that there are a number that post here that could do a better job with that article), but the issue is less with Bornstein's obviously lacking abilities and more that we haven't developed any other options.

Quick, list all the left backs that are "close" to the national team.

- Heath Pearce
- Zach Loyd

Well, that was fun. Anthony Wallace was the next great hope, but he's Marvell Wynne 2.0.

Who else is there? Drew Moor, Hunter Freeman, Kevin Goldthwaite?

Left back has been a problem position for years, and we have developed players at every position except that one.

Jeff Agoos is the new US "Technical Director." Maybe he can fix it.

I thought Ream was okay. Little too casual with the ball in the penalty area, but that's better than just panicking and booting it every time.

Nothing "too casual" about it. He was calm and did what he was supposed to do. If he had time, he held the ball and distributed it well. Bocanegra came in and just booted it out of bounds, no matter where he was or what was going on around him. I would much rather have someone like Ream.

I can't believe they rated cakes over Dempsey. Then again, I usually don't agree with ESPN's grades.

yeah. thankfully, we're past the dmb at left-back era

it doesn't help that every other young right-back we have is billed as "right-back/can play left-back"

One thing stood out to me after the game...

For YEARS, the US won games with great goalkeeping, defend and counter tactics, and using our size and strength to nick a goal on a set piece.

Last night, Paraguay, who have been to the last four World Cups, and 8 WCs overall, had to rely on great goalkeeping, defend and counter tactics, and using size and strength to nick a goal on a set piece to beat us. We dominated the game, and dictated play from start to finish, just couldn't get it done in the final third.

That, my friends, is progress.

They had to play us like El Salvador or Guatemala do. That impressed me.

I read those rankings last night. They're awful, can't believe he got paid for that.

I like your reasoning. Maybe I just underestimated Paraguay.

Jozy just hasn't come along/found his place on the team. he is not a starter. Bornstein not good enough. Like Boca's leadership out there, but we need skill around him. Landy was meh IMO, thought Dempsey had better game. Chandler is fast, can't wait to see him on a dry field. If CD9 returns 100% with Aguedelo, Donovan, Dempsey, Chandler, Bradley, we will win GC with ease

Go ahead and list all the guys who can contribute more and should start ahead of him in a 4-4-2.

We'll sit here and wait while you compile the list.

I'm going to agree with ESPN here.

I thought Donovan had a better game than Dempsey.

Donovan lead a couple of breaks, that should have resulted in better goal scoring oppurtunities. Dempsey drew a lot of fouls, but there were a few times he took way too many touches.

Chandler is awesome, he should be starting every meaningful US national team game from here on out.

As should Ream, the question should be who starts along side him. Gooch or Demerit. Boca needs to stay at LB right now.

You can slurp on Ream all you want, and his passing was (mostly) excellent last night...

...but I can assure you, Gooch would not have been thrown to the ground by some frick from Paraguay.

I think Ream had lost his footing while being grabbed. Demerit also fell

There were a lot of people slipping early in the game last night.

Gooch has been terrible since his injury.

And Jones was waay better than Edu.

He's more orange than black, FWIW.
