Give me a few things to watch from from the USMNT this WC

I already checked the handy guide on page 1 to get that first acronym!
I don't really follow soccer at all, I know essentially nothing. The only time I watch it is every 4 years for the world cup...I'm sure that's probably looked down upon by some of you, but at least I watch more than never right?
Anyways I'll be watching all the US games and would like a few things to look for for a casual viewer. Really all I know is this:
-Donovan did not make the cut for this year's WC go around
-We've lost the last 2 WCs to ghana who we open with this year
-Germany is one of the best in the world so that's looking like a probable loss
-It's in Brazil
-Tim Howard is pretty stout at keeper
That's about it. Are there any basic things that I can keep an eye out for while watching to make the experience a little more enjoyable?
Also, why is posting scores in a title such a big time offense? Just to avoid spoilers?

Portugal is ranked right bellow Germany in the FIFA rankings.
They're a little over rated, but have the one of the best player, Cristiano Ronaldo, playing for them.

The guy who should be our main scoring threat is Jozy Altidore. He hasn't scored at all in 2014, so much of our hope is riding on a sudden change of form from him. The good thing is he has gone from no goals to loads of goals in a short time already in his USMNT career.
Three big questions I can think of now are
- who starts on the left side (midfield and defense)
- who is our "impact sub" - who comes off the bench if we need a goal. Candidates are Brad Davis, Mix Diskeruud, Aron Johannson, and possibly Julian Green.
- do we start with Dempsey in a striker role or in the midfield

That's fine, I only watch track once every four years. Just don't try to impose some crazy idea to make soccer 'better' or talk about how much better we could be with other American athletes.

Yes, makes less sense for the world cup since the results of the games will likely be all over the internet.

- Watch Michael Bradley in the middle of the field. He makes our offense tick. Our most important player
- We have an emerging star (in a lot of our eyes) in Fabian Johnson who will be playing RB most of the time.
