Explain to a non-soccer person: Why does offsides exist in soccer?

I am not a big soccer person but I do not understand why offsides exists in soccer, can anyone tell me the reason why it exists?
I just don't understand why an offensive player is limited to where the defensive players are playing and is at the mercy of the defensive players when moving upfield.
It's like in basketball. Yeah a player can sit back and cherry pick, but is putting his defense at a disadvantage having to play 5-on-4 against the offensive opposition, so that's why players generally don't cherry pick
Same with soccer. If a player wants to hang out on his side of the field near his team's goal, why can't he? Or if he wants to run down the field past the other team's defenders, why can't he do so?

I understand cherry picking as a reason but couldn't they modify it to where a player isn't penalized for being a step ahead of the defense like the US player just was?

Offsides is a good rule when it is correctly applied. Otherwise, it would begin to look like the 1940s and 1950s games where teams just launched the ball across the field, kind of like hail marys over and over.
Of course when it is applied incorrectly, it is a terrible rule, and that's what you saw today.

It also opens up the field for play between the boxes.
Think of it like American football. What stops a wide receiver from standing past the safeties at the start of the play? The line of scrimmage.
The offsides rule allows for an ever-changing line of scrimmage. Without it, soccer would just be big goons kicking it down the field to other big goons near the goal.

It's essentially the same thing except in both of those sports there is a set line.

It's not like basketball though. It's not 5 on 5, and the field of play is incredibly larger.

If there was no offside it would force the defense to play way back in their half of the field. The game would suck. The middle would be wide open but teams would just park their defense in the 18. Plus you can only be offside on the opponents half. Just giving the defense a fair shot, and the ability to push forward without getting punished. Now teams with fast players will destroy teams that play a high line, but its a risk you take.

I don't understand why football teams don't just line their wide receivers up in the end zone.
Why make them run past the defenders? You could just throw the ball up into the end zone over and over until somebody catches a touchdown.

Basketball is much more dependent on everyone playing defense than strikers getting back to play defense. You have 5 players in much tighter space, so the 5 vs 4 is clearly more impactful than 10 vs 9 in a huge area. Can't compare those two at all IMO. The whole way the defense plays would be different. The offsides trap is one of the best tactics in soccer. You risk stepping up at the right moment to either get the offsides or give the player a great run. Taking offsides away severely dumbs down the game.
