Everyone knows this is Messi’s last World Cup, but what about Mbappe?

He’ll be 28 in December. The chance of him being in top form in 2034 seems highly unlikely, but what about 2030? Will he be fast enough or do you think the wear will catch up with him before then? And you know the French will have some skilled fast wingers coming up.

I personally think he’ll still be fast enough but a lot can change.

He's a lot more in the Ronaldo mold of being elite due to elite physical traits and being a ruthless finisher.

I don't think he's a fitness sicko like Ronaldo though, so gun to my head his decline will be much more rapid and due to injuries that just come with aging.

I'd give him about a 70% chance at 2030 (100% if he's healthy) and 10% chance at 2034. France just has too talented of a pipeline to hand out vibes spots.

He'll be around in 2030, but probably not 2034

I'm guessing he'll have won a UCL by then and [should] be the all time WC goal scorer. He'll have nothing left to win or prove, France is perennially stacked and he doesn't seem to have the Ronaldo drive to keep going.

That’s what I’m thinking too. His skillset doesn’t really seem to allow him to merge into a more facilitating/supporting role like Mahrez which would give him a bit more longevity in the game.

I think he’ll be fit to go and come back in 2030. Honestly, I think he’ll cement the WC scoring record this tournament

I'm not sure why you're putting these two in the same bucket. They're 11 years apart.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I know they're making a big deal out of the scoring record. But for how good he is, 13 goals in 4 and a half(2006) WCs was kind of mid. Looks like he's on track to bring that avg up here in this tournament.

Also Holy shite, haven't see you in a while

Messi is almost 39

It’s reasonable to think Mbappe could be around at that age so 2034 is definitely in play

I think the thought process is that they play the game differently. Mbappe relies on his pace and finishing. That is going to fade. Ronaldo looks washed now and he was the same type of player.

Messi was receiving the ball in his own third last night. He's as good of a passer as there is on earth and can basically play facilitator and still have a giant impact on the game. KM's game is running in behind. When you can't beat guys for pace anymore because you're 40 years old, what is he really going to bring to the table.

But Mbappe will only be 35 at 2034 World Cup

That seems much more likely while 2038 (39yo) is probably out of the question

True, but with the way France is pumping out attacking talent recently, I doubt he would be able to physically compete for a spot. However, he's well on track to go down as WC all-time leading scorer, so if something crazy happens and he doesn't get that title this cup or in 2030, I could see him getting a spot on the 2034 just to hunt for PK goals to get the record.

6 years younger than Ronaldo is the point. Mbappe isn't Ronaldo of course but I could certainly see him playing in the next one

Messi’s skillset doesn’t rely on him abusing you with pace. Messi can run a game. He can pass, he can create, he can finish. That allows Messi to stay dangerous.

Arguably the most conditioned and chiseled athlete in any sport next to LeBron. He is an extreme exception, not the rule.

Yeah I don’t think Mbappe will be active at that age (2038 WC) but no reason to think he can’t do it at 35

Messi was 31 when they said the same things about him in 2018.
