College football lives off of the band playing a song and the student section singing or chanting. In the MLS fans bring their own drums and other instrument into the crowed to help with rhythm. Besides most of the chants are the same old "Defense" one word boring shite. The MLS has by far the most interactive fans out of any professional league, and better than 90% of college teams.
Is it just the scarves that you hate? I'm not really seeing why if you take scarves away from fans how that's going to legitimize US soccer fans?

In football the band leads the fans, but in the MLS the fans lead the band. I'm not sure about LSU, but at Ole Miss there were plenty of times where the band tried desperately to get the crowed in, but they were playing no one wanted to chant to. (You can only say Defense so many times)
Also the band does like 90% of the work, while MLS games the bands get the fans in rhythm don't over power the fans that are singing.

Ive been to about 50 redskins games and who knows how many WVU home and away games. They don't even compare to European soccer and never will. In fact they have gotten worse and more stale.

Nothing screams exciting atmosphere like a midseason game between the Hornets and the Kings. I just love to be told to "GET LOUD" and shout "DE-FENSE" thirty times a game.

A lot of it can be contributed to the new stadiums in America that can almost kill the environment. More geared to corporate america than the blue collar fan.

I love going to grizzlies games, but I always feel embarrassed that they just assume that unless they tell fans to cheer that no one is going to.

College football as well doesn't compare. Most big time schools can barely fill the student sections now which would be the equivalent of the Ultras not showing up.

The scarves were just an example. I didn't say that I hated them.
My point was that we as Americans should make our own traditions and forge our own identity as soccer fans.

We started having the fat head poster, which I really like. We got it from college basketball, but it's not something that everyone in the stadium could bring and hold up.
I'm sure someone more creative than me can think of something new, but I think everything has just about been done, and there is no shame of taking something and putting an American twist on it to make it better.
