Another brilliant retort.

There isn't one needed when trying to debate Rooney vs Sturridge

I just can't see any justification for dropping him unless Hodgson is going to emphasize defensive shape, which doesn't make sense since he didn't call in some older defensive stalwarts.

yea this 23 is going to run

Even if I bought your arguments, there's no scenario where I think completely dropping Rooney from the WC squad would be justified.

Lets not forget Sturridge has some serious mental lapses out there just not being involved or interested in the game.

Rooney will bust his arse out there even if he is being an idiot.

I dont mean from the squad I mean from the starting line up.

like SCH said, this team is going to run, and defensively I would expect us to press alot, taking note from Liverpool and Southampton influence that the squad has. This is turn helps boost these players claims for places.

The best teams are built on familiarity with both the system and each other. If you look at Germany, Spain, Italy they almost always have a heavy reliance on Bayern, Barca and Juve and they play the best team not the best players. Something England has never done.

Rooney does usually bust his arse, but he sure as hell didn't in the last WC, and the sending off before the Euros is the definition of a mental lapse. He is still undisciplined, running back to the corner flag is a great show of heart and desire, but in reality its not always the best thing to have your lone striker in your own corner flag.

From a neutral I'm much more worried about Rooney than Sturridge if either are up against my team.

Defoe belongs on the 23.

I think you are overstating the influence of one team on some squads. Italy's 2006 squad was diverse as hell. Tiki-taka was a style of play developed by the Spanish FA and not Barcelona specifically. Germany has morphed from a counter-attacking team to a possession team, which is concurrent with Bayern's move in the same direction, though the national team moved to a possession based philosophy after 2010 while Bayern did it only after this last year.

I would say that all three teams play a very specific national style. It's also no coincidence that the three best deep-lying playmakers in the world play for those three teams. The hope here is that Gerrard can play the DLP role well enough to control the game. Though he is an excellent passer, he doesn't have the ball retention ability of Pirlo, Xavi, or Schweinsteiger. Wilshere will be a better option at DLP once he realizes he's more effective there than at AM.

As a Pool fan I agree with this.

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to play together. Rooney can help drop to link up with the midfield while Sturridge will make runs into space.

Maybe, but I do think that familiarity and partnerships can be an important part of making a successful national squad, and if we play 2 CMs its why I think Henderson would start over Wilshere next to Gerrard.

Sure, but I think what's more important is the consistency of styles. For the last couple of cycles, England has been trying to play a hybrid continental/English game which hasn't worked. If they want to run like 'Pool does, then they should be prepared to be scored upon. The success of certain teams has more to do with a continuity of styles rather than the influence of players.

Until England decides to build a team around a DLP, they will probably struggle. I think they have decided to build this team around Gerrard, and have tried to give him runners, but I'm unsure of Gerrard's ability to control a game from deep. He can make any pass, but can he dictate a tempo? That's ability is something all of the top international sides have.
