I don't think anyone cited his progression or development. He obviously has to do what he thinks is best for him but it's pretty disappointing the first American to ever have a meaningful role on a team with a viable chance at trophies turns down the opportunity to represent the US on the biggest stage. I would prefer him to show more ambition and competitiveness.

Wouldnt even be a spot starter imo. They just brought in Zaha for right side depth. Landy would rot at Old Trafford.

I think it's more important that Donovan stay in MLS, to prove to Jurgen that he is better than Graham Zusi.

OK guys check out a possibility guys.
MU aren't going to sign an 31 year old guy to anymore than a 2 year contract and Donovan wouldn't have made the move until after the MLS playoffs anyway.
So why not just sign a multi year deal with L.A. and go over in Jan. and help Moyes , M.U. gets a little help during Moyes transition , Donovan gets to stay in shape.
It is obvious that Klinsman wants Demps and Donovan to play somewhere this W.C. year during the MLS off season.

Donovan is 31 years old he's not going to progress anymore as a player. For guys like him and Dempsey this season is all about getting prepared mentally and physically. He's comfortable in LA and if he thinks that's the best place for him to get that preparation who are we to judge. Besides who would choose to live in Manchester over Los Angeles, plus he'd have to deal with a bunch of weird Euros. Not to mention the Galaxy is HIS team while at Man U he's just another sub

There is no inherent answer to the situation. At his age, his progression is going to be minimal. He doesn't need to "push" himself. It's all mental at this point. He needs to be in a comfortable environment where he can focus on his game and get mentally prepared for the WC. If he feels like LA is the place for that, then it was the right decision.
A loan is one thing, a permanent move is an entirely different animal.

I'll tell you why: because Arena is going to lose him for much of the Summer with the WC, so he doesn't also want to lose him for the months prior to that.
Now if it was a short loan, say through March, maybe. Still not sure it would happen. Donovan probably doesn't want to risk an injury in a tougher league against hack happy English defenders who want to show the 'murican a ting or two.

Very few people itt even suggested Donovan needed to move to improve his game. I think most people would just be happy to see him play week in and week out on one of the best teams in the world. LSUBEAST and yourself are making asinine assumptions.

Oh, has Donovan not already done enough, in your opinion, for U.S. soccer?
Now he has to move, at 31, to a place he doesn't want to live and probably won't play much just so you can watch for him on Saturday mornings?
I would love for him to PLAY at ManU too, but it's silly to fault him for not going based on the idea that he's slacking off on a chance to advance U.S. soccer.

Not at all. As I've said, when you look at Valencia's current form and Zaha's youth and inexperience, I do think Donovan could have positioned himself for some regular playing time.
I know most of the Man U fans OTB will say CM is the weakest spot right now, but in terms of actual on the field performance it's been the RW. They need help there, Donovan might have been able to provide that.

This is great. I love shite like this.
I can't wait to hear what assumptions I've made, and I do want to hear them, but while I wait I will gladly point out the assumptions you, and others, are making.
Before I list them, however, you must understand that they are all linked together to compile into one big assumption.
#1 That Donovan would actually get enough playing time to justify leaving LA.
#2 That Manchester United want him for his talent, rather than his marketability.
#3 That Donovan gives a frick about what the move to MU would mean for state of US Soccer.
#4 (and the culmination of them all) That Donovan's move to MU can only have a positive effect on him and the US.
The way I see it, it's not a risk worth taking in a WC season. Next year maybe you have an argument. But moving to MU means he has to fight with other top top talent to play. He already is pretty mentally fragile as is. What happens when he doesn't see the field? Or only plays as a sub or in league cup matches? What will that do for his confidence going in to the WC?
