Meh. Ghana was garbage for the whole tournament.
Portugal was garbage against Germany, and garbage for 75 minutes against us before (stop me if you've heard this before) they took over the game late.
We were always going to lose to Germany.
Our path out of the group was always win one, lose one and tie one (and hope for the best on GD).
It's how we got out of the group in 2002 and 2010, and if we would have handled Ghana in 2006, our path to get out was there again. Reyna's injury and Gooch's silly "penalty" did us in.

Davis was taken for a very specific role. I think jurgy thought he would be slightly better on defense against Germany and could help us get a set-piece goal. Definitely didn't work out.
I think jurgens biggest flaw for the cup was taking too many specialists for a 20 man field squad. He needed specifically a Donovan type that could fill in for three positions and serviceably replace the role for several of the specialists. That then opens a spot for a jozy target forward back-up too. It was a gamble. It didnt pan out in terms of the reward, but we still made it out of the group.

Sheep, Ghana was the only team not to lose to Germany so you can't say they were garbage the entire tournament. We outplayed Portugal for the majority of the game. I'm not a huge fan of Jurgen's roster selections or game management for the most part, but I will give him some credit for getting us through an absurdly hard group despite not having Altidore or Donovan at our disposal.

They were the first team to figure out that Howedes was waaaaaay too slow to be playing outside back at the World Cup. Every team after that just poured people at him. And Ghana is one team, you CAN'T concede the wings to. They'll run you to death out there.
Even Algeria tried their best to attack down his side.
Except for us. We stayed compact in the middle and went with Zusi and Davis "wide".

I enjoyed these debates with Djikstra because he would have all these well-reasoned and lengthy opinions. I would not necessarily agree with him, but it was a good (yet very repetitive) debate.

I like his want to not play long ball/counter against any team that near and better than us. I like his idea that we should be the most physically fit team in the WC, which I think we were one the most.
Where he goes completely off the deep end is his constantly screwing up the lineups for no other reason to me than his petty jealousy. Or maybe he just is incompetent at making line ups.
I tend to lean towards the crowd that says he worked the team too hard going into the WC, and thus ended up hurting the players more than benefiting them.
I also think he has small penis syndrome and refuses to accept that the MLS is a very good option for most of our USMNT players that are over the age of 28 (plus Jozy).

I'm one of the people who defended the decision at the time, and there's no denying in retrospect that it was a terrible decision. I'm a Jurgen sympathizer, but LD could have filled so many holes in our game that would have only strengthened our game. Changes at the youth levels or not, people won't ever forgive leaving him home when we had some dead weight on the roster. I don't think we should have left Yedlin or Green home, but I do think Davis and Wondo could have stayed home.
