Not as good as Barcelona's. Xavi and Iniesta are better than anyone on RM other than Ronaldo. Messi is great but there's a reason he hasnt had tremondous success with Argentina. He benefits alot from Guardiola's scheme and that midfield

It's clearly because a team with Tevez and Aguero coming off of the bench is awful and not worthy of a player with Messi's talent

No one would have to make excuses for Lionel if they avoided annointing him as the next coming of Maradona, well, Maradona's equal. He is a great player, clearly one of the two best in the world. I don't know why people can't just leave it at that, for now

Guardiola's scheme

I wouldn't go that far. Guardiola uses him well, but Guardiola's scheme benefits far more from Messi than vice versa. This is essentially a world cup winning nucleus that he makes better

In the last world cup, Argentina's defense was awful and their coach was a coke addict. I can't speak for their play in South American competition.

I'd be surprised if Cristiano Ronaldo ever wins anything on the international level and I'd be surprised if Messi ever wins a world cup, too.

But Ronaldo doesn't play with top players right?

I agree it's hard to criticize Messi for playing with great players when Cristiano does as well.

Now, it kind of is. Certaintly wasn't hard toa year or two ago (When 90% of the world went, "Barcelona beat Real Madrid? Messi must be better than Ronaldo"). Yet, very few did

But, even now, would you argue that any Real Madrid player is at the level of Xavi or Iniesta?

People lean towards Messi over CR because in the Clasicos lately, Messi brings his A game almost every time and CR will completely disappear for whole stretches of the game. I remember watching that blowout in 2010 and thinking that CR wasn't even trying.

In the last 7 meetings, Messi has 5 goals and CR has one and it was a PK, and Barca is 5-0-2.

Not the best way to compare, but it is what the casual soccer fan sees first.

An attacking player played like shite when his team had 25% possession and expected him to catch the other team on the counter? No way.

That's harsh, I'm projecting. Messi hasn't played that well (for him) in these more recent, equal clasicos., though.

You have missed a couple of games.

At the end of the day, neither of them are at the Zidane or Ronaldinho level of, "LOL, I'm playing soccer."

I would agree. It's too bad Ronaldinho just disappeared.

Not as spectacular as he used to be, but he's still a great passer, and you notice it more

Back to Ronaldo, I've recently notice that he instictually goes with the most appropriate strike including in situations that call for overhead kicks. He always makes contact on overhead kick attempts, as well. It's insane

I think you are the person on this board who is gayer for CR7 than me.

He's the only truly exceptional player that I grew up watching almost every single week

I've always had a soft spot for United that I try to hide and just followed his career to Real Madrid

In a parallel universe, Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze never ran into each other

That's probably the stupidest that I've ever seen two professional players look

ETA: Brazil 2006 or '10 is probably the greatest team that never was

The biggest problem with Messi with Argentina, lies in the fact that there is no central midfield presence. He nearly plays in the Xavi-position at times just get on the ball. He's been sensational in creating goals for Argentina, but his scoring record doesn't live up to his Barça scoring rates. When he's asked to play up top, he's often partnered with Tevez or Higuain (:gag:) who are far from unselfish players.

Wit the emergence of Pastore in the Argentina setup, Messi may get a little freer range on the wings and up top, instead of being asked to be the creative hub.

For Argentina, a midfield trio of Mascherano, Banega & Pastore is pretty damn good...

They are just loaded with forwards... If they go with Messi as a false 9, I'd play DiMaria and Lavezzi on the wings...

Now their back 4 and GK are not really world class (Zanetti and Heinze are old)

He was playing with Cambiasso, Mascherano, and Banega at times during the Copa America which lends itself to that sort of criticism of the team wrt attacking.

Ftr, I don't necessarily believe that Messi has played poorly for Argentina. I just believe that there needs to be criticism of his performances if some people are going to call him one of the GOATs as some do. Nothing against Messi. It's criticism for criticism's sake. Besides the supermodel girlfriends, I'm not sure that Messi and Ronaldo are unalike from things that I've heard about them
