To be fair a lot of people watching don’t know shite about soccer.

That's a good point. Maybe I'm just being smug. Either way, frick that dude.

Meh. Fox has come out said that for their coverage they will overtly assume the American viewer knows shite and go with loud people and gimmicks and most of their broadcasters watching on a TV in Los Angeles.

In Fox's defense, the average American viewer during the WC does not have much soccer knowledge. They see a hand ball in the box and need an explanation why it's not a penalty.

Good point about WC. But for domestic leagues and UCL (which they no longer have) fans far more likely to know more and want more detailed soccer analysis.

This is still better than when they had Michael Strahan explain the very basic rules of soccer before a CL final

As annoying as it is for us seasoned viewers who know the game, I don't mind him for World Cup coverage where lots of new viewers are tuning in. I've tried explaining offside to my dad like five times now to no avail.

But don't shove him in our face during MLS or Champions League coverage where your audience is 99% hardcore fans of the sport. It's needlessly patronizing. ESPN coverage treats the viewer with more respect.

Totally feel this pain.
My dad is good with offside, but can't understand some fouls and handballs. He just can't grasp how there's a gray area on the calls.

NBC is a better reference. ESPN is sadly a bit player in soccer now. And all we get is German Cup games with Mark Donaldson’s annoying accent and non-full screen images.

Was one of the few things ESPN’s annoying arse actually did well.

Curious to see if Turner will throw Barkley at UCL.

Part of me is morbidly curious how Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson would call a UCL match. It would be hilarious, if nothing else. I just imagine Chuck clowning all the players who dive.

Inside the NBA is great. Ironically, I think FOX's World Cup coverage is kind of going for that loose vibe, but it's failing miserably.
