He wasn't that bad.

Also, Brazil seems to be big on giving previous coaches another chance. Although Scolari and Parreira did actually win the Cup.

They sure don't like hiring foreigners.

it had issues for a few reasons

1. imagine brazil's offensive talent without neymar

2. brazil and the players bucked his attempts to develop/advance their style of play

3. there was some major turmoil with "big stars" like ronaldinho and robinho, and kaka wasn't enough to lead/run the offense

No one's ever won a world cup with a coach not native to the team. Dunga ain't gonna do it either.

I would be very careful to draw cause and effect from that historical point.

Exactly. The countries good enough to win a World Cup are also the ones good enough to produce their own great coaches.

Dunga struggled to modernize the Brazilian National Team his last go round. You can mostly blame his failure on Felipe Melo. What the CBF needs to do is hire Leonardo. He'll be the administrator they need to restyle that organization.

ETA:

I think the cause for the stat is that soccer powers are too proud to hire foreign coaches. That was the point of my post.

what better way to go forward, then by going backwards?

Uh his team barely beat the U.S. in the Confed Cup Final, barely beat North Korea 2-1, and lost to the Dutch after taking an early lead. Dunga's garbage.

He went to the quarterfinals.. and the 2010 team wasn't any better than this one.

Im going ahead and saying they weren't that bad.

Won a tough group in 2010 that included portugal and ivory coast.
plus lost 2-1 to the dutch who played great in that cup and lost to spain in the finals.

Won Copa America against Argentina. Won the confederations cup against a USA team that just knocked off spain.

I thought he was a pretty good coach. Had struggles mainly from trying to change the national team identity a change that is oh so obvious after how this brazil team played.

The 2010 team was worse and their results reflected this.

Portugal had to win a playoff to get there and scored 0 goals in their group matches that weren't against North Korea. That generation of Ivory Coasts players greatest achievement was getting out of a group with Colombia, Japan, and Greece. And as I said, North Korea 2-1.

After Brazil went up 1-0. Maybe a better coach doesn't cough up that lead.

Dunga's team gave up 2 goals to an inferior opponent and it took one of Kaka's best games in a Brazil shirt to save them. Switzerland beat Spain so does that mean any team that beat Switzerland after that was of that caliber? Of course not.

What does Dunga have to do with Felipe Melo being a moron?

I don't think it can be understated how different Dunga was to the typical Brazilian coach, and how hesitant the CBF is in general to European coaching techniques.

Who the frick cares about the Confederations Cup? The USA outplayed the Brazilians in the first half, and the Brazilians outplayed the US in the second. It happens in every competition.

You realize who assisted that first goal for Brazil, right?

Yes, it was a fantastic pass from Melo to Robinho. You realize who was responsible for the first Dutch goal, right? And who got himself sent off with a silly foul five minutes after the second Dutch goal? Melo was a moron, a talented morn, but a moron nonetheless.

You brought it up first. It's a thoroughly meaningless tournament as far as results go.

As far as the North Korea game, Dunga set up the Brazilians to be a counterattacking side. Maybe you'll remember the 2nd or 3rd goal from the first USA-Brazil game where Brazil counterattacked with magnificent speed after a US corner.

If you actually watched the North Korea game you wouldn't hold that game against the Brazilian team, as the Koreans played five across the back and 3 in midfield. The five in the back became six in the back as soon as Brazil started to attack. Brazil refused to play long passes, insisting on a short build up game, which is much different from the Brazil we saw this year.

Brazil dominated that game, and it was a testament to the Koreans that kept the game so close.

In regards to going backward, the fact Dunga is the most tactically astute Brazilian manager is a testament to the reality that Brazil has avoided since the 2002 WC, which is that Brazil has fallen behind tactically with regards to the Western Europeans, and it took the jolting defeat to the Germans to make the CBF realize they had to modernize in every way. There is no other Brazilian coach who has even had a modicum of success in Europe except for Leonardo, who is now strictly an administrator, and even his success as a coach was mediocre.

Talent wise i think significantly.. to me, that was a down year brazil team, especially offensively. They were at the end of a golden generation.

minus the final scores in the last 2 games yes. If they lose 1-0 to germany and 2-1 against the dutch, the chicken littles of brazil would not be as loud now.
plus, I don't think a defensive fall apart would have happened with a dunga coached squad either. This 2014 team would have been more fit for a Dunga style of team.

Well yea, then again maybe another coach doesn't get there. I mean we can play "what if" all day, especially if you look at a game by game approach.

you're second guessing this guy for decisions made 4 years ago. he had a great chance to advance far in a tournament. and had his team with a chance to beat the team that made the finals. Minus the lofty expectations of brazil and the hatred of trying to play soccer in not a brazil fashion, this guy might still be the coach. He was offered as early as 2000 to be manager of brazil. There is a reason he was often sought after by brazil and why he was sought after again

Seems logical. There is no way this won't end in international glory.
