As far as Berhalter goes, I wanted him fired after the Canada loss in 2019, but credit where credit is due, he experimented a lot and got this team playing at times fun, at times relentless, soccer. There seems to be pride in wearing the crest again and that is all we can ask from this team.

I still think it was idiotic that USSF waited a whole damn year to hire him when they could've hired him the day after we lost to Trinidad. It would've allowed him to use 2018 as the time to tinker and experiment before jumping into the gold cup, nations league and qualifying in 2019/20.

COVID actually helped in that case in that it gave us more time to reevaluate some things and get more players into the pool.

Kind of hard to do that when he was the first one to win a World Cup since the country's unification.

After World Cup 2018 everyone knew he was done

If we qualify for next summer and have a good showing, there should be no reason for him to not continue with the group he's basically raising as if he's a foster parent.

Yea for sure

Right now he’s doing what the standard is for our manager

Hopefully he hasn’t peaked this summer

If we get out the group and win a knockout match

He has to stay for 2026 if he wants

If he doesn’t want to manage keep him on in USSF as another role

He’s a players coach 100%

He’s lacking tactically big time

But the players give everything for him and you can’t hate on that

I feel like this was the gripe with BB 10 years ago

ETA: Not that I'm holding it against Berhalter. I was 100% against the hire when it happened, especially considering the fallout with Jay's involvement. He's been good this year though. We've looked like those mid-late 00's teams lately and I love it.

I was with you until here. How was he responsible for a lack of quality professional players?

He's not responsible for the stars, as those are products of the club academies. And he had the misfortune of not having a top tier guy emerge during his tenure. However, he is responsible for the depth, as the gap in talent in the player pool of any nation outside your core is pretty small.

Klinsmann was the coach for 6 years and really, there's barely anyone who is a solid rotational guy aged 26+ who played much for the USMNT under Klinsmann. There's Brooks, Yedlin, Zardes... and that's about it. There should at least be some decent pool guys who are depth options. Even guys like Miazga and Acosta didn't play under Klinsmann.

And there's plenty of international players from that age group who just never became USMNT contributors, like Holmes, Diskerud, or Nagbe. No, none of them are McKennie or Pulisic, but they could use some experienced depth and it doesn't really exist. I mean, check out the roster of the his last game before getting canned:

I mean, yikes.

He isn't responsible for the depth players either. He can only use what is available.

Holmes was playing in League One when Jurgen was fired. Mix wasn't doing shite for NYCFC and was about to move to Sweden. Nagbe didn't even become a US citizen until late 2015. How is any of this Jurgen's responsibility?

If anything you can argue Jurgen was trying to build depth when he made the selections he did for the World Cup.

...which was fricking stupid that he was using the biggest tournament in the world as partly a youth experiment.
