Let's not forget either that Ronaldo's act was purposeful and there was no VAR misuse. There's really no reason his got suspended other than being Ronaldo. If you want controversy, that's the controversial decision.

FIFA also suspended one game red card punishments for Otamendi and Caicedo, the same as they did for Balogun. So there is also recent precedent for negating a one game suspension.

Again this is something FIFA did for four different players entering the World Cup who were going to have sit out WC games due to red cards. The U.S. is benefiting from the shift in policy but we didn’t start it. Four other countries, including a UEFA one, all got the benefit of FIFA invoking Article 27 before we did.
