Aside from the Ukraine match, what has John Brooks done to cast doubt

Fell out of favor in Berlin.
Although, as I've said before, it's silly to negatively overstate his performance in the Ukraine match. Everyone was terrible that day, all 11 starters.

I heard that last week he got a giant back tattoo and couldn't play last weekend because of it. Really shows that he isn't taking his opportunities very seriously right now.

Newsflash: the guy who would have been starting over him is out for the rest of the season. See if his performances over the next month get him invited into the pre WC camp.

He goes up against players that are leaps and bounds better than the quality of players all of our other centerbacks in the pool face. That can prove invaluable, considering who is in our group. At his best, he is probably our most potent defender. The problem though is that he hasn't really shown well in his limited time in a USMNT kit.

Dunno about that. Even if it were true, he seems too inexperienced to be a first choice CB in the WC. Would be different if he had been playing regularly for us.

He is largely a regular starter for a team in the Bundesliga. I don't think Gonzalez or Goodson could sniff that and even Besler is a long shot.
In terms of pure upside, he is our biggest hope.

In terms of upside he's easily our best prospect. That said, I think our best CB pairing for the upcoming WC is Gooch/Goodson and Besler

For better or for worse, I think we're rolling with the Besler/Gonzo pairing. As much as I foresee Gonzalez' shortcomings at the worst possible moments, I don't think Gooch, Goodson or Brooks are that much ahead of him at this point, if at all, to where you can warrant giving one on of those 3 the spot ahead of Omar and forcing Besler to drum up some chemistry with a new backline partner.
I don't know, I just feel like at this point, it's too late. JK basically forced Bocanegra to an unceremonious international retirement in favor of grooming Gonzalez for this very tournament. Might as well see it out the rest of the way, now.

I think Goodson and Gonzo are about even right now. Goodson has more experience and is less prone to bonehead plays, though.
And Gooch, by all measures, has been playing well in a better league than those too and would be my pick. He better make the 30, although I saw something that said Jurgen would only take 28.

That sounds crazy, but then again, I tried to pick the 23 on ASN today and had trouble coming up with 23 I would want to bring. Newsflash, we don't have a lot of great defenders.

He's been getting worse in space, and his distribution has been shaky lately(as it always has.) He also ball watches a lot, like all of our CBs that aren't Matt Besler... but I think he might be the worst of the four (Goodson, Gooch, Gonzalez and Brooks) about it.
I remember saying some time ago (like at the beginning of qualifying) that Omar was where Gooch was in 2005.
So far, I think that's still where he is.
I see them ranked as:
Cameron
Gooch/Goodson
Gonzalez
Brooks
I don't think Jurgen sees them that way, and I don't think we can have Cameron play CB. Maybe Evans or Parkhurst can make a push - but I think I'd rather one of the CB options and Cameron at RB than one of the RB options and Cameron at CB.

I can almost guarantee all of these guys will be there ("almost" being solely because I'm not 100% sure about Parkhurst... more like 85%). We might take 9 "defenders" seeing as how many of these can also deputize in midfield. Beasley and/or Johnson could also be listed as midfielders. So where does that leave us for defenders?

If we put Cameron at CB with Besler, I think our best bet would be to put Fab at RB and Beasley at LB. Of all of our other RB/LB options, Beasley scares me the least out of him, Evans and Parkhurst.

8 defenders seems like too many, considering how versatile Cameron is. In general coaches bring one defender too many to the WC, and that extra defender doesn't often play. I imagine you could get away with three CBs because of Cameron's versatility, but I doubt we will. 4 CBs, and 4 fullbacks is par for the course, but I'd love for Klinsmann to be daring.

Yeah the problem is we have three good defenders: Besler, Fabian, and Cameron. So we will either have a sub-par fullback or central defender.
