I didnt watch the game, sanks espn, but to be fair neither of our lbs should be starting. I was just thinking its time to move on from gibbs. My reasoning is because the other guys are not receiving enough playing time. So lets give gibbs all the reps so when he gets hurt we dont have anyone with epl experience behind him. Gibbs and diaby have been huge dissappointments with their nagging injuries.

Very few fullbacks in world football are as promising as Gibbs. Wenger will keep him, as he knows how to develop a LB. We just have to hope Gibbs injury problems are behind him.

Gibbs is definitely serviceable, but his flaws are really brought to light due to compounding his defensive deficiencies with our center backs lack of defensive quality.

People are fans of Kos, Verm, and Gibbs but fact is Arsenal truly need to upgrade the backline. Kos has made a huge leap in performance from last season, but how much better can we reasonably expect him to get? Can Vermaelen get any better at actual defense? How long do you hold out and hope Gibbs with more playing time improves?

Who are the CB's right now that would improve us, and that we could afford? Who is the LB in world football that will improve our attacking play and defensive play?

Wenger's main interest is always attacking ability, even for CB's, which is why we've had ball-playing CB's for the past 10 years or so (post-Adams). I'm going to stop short of saying that Wenger doesn't care about defense, but in reality, he's more interested in how to control the game. We don't practice tackling in training, we practice positioning and pressing. With Verm and Kos, we have two fast ball playing CB's that most other teams would kill to have. Not only that, they work well together, they can press, they can each bring the ball out of defense, and both are pretty good distributor's out of the back. I don't see the need to upgrade at any position, I see the need to build depth. This is what we need. The reality is that there exists very few upgrades in world football, and if anyone can find them it's Wenger. Verm, on his day, is as good a CB as there is the PL. Kos has been, along with Kompany, one of the best CB's in the league this season. I don't know what else people want from them, to be honest.

I just know that with the back 4 we have we simply are just too unreliable match in match out. Against the better sides whom we can't utterly dominate possession and take off some of the pressure they do stupid shite, plain and simple. It's like you said, the focus on actual defending is a problem.

Now, it's true we really can't afford top notch upgrades. All I know is something needs to change since they routinely bungle up plenty of situations even against much lesser sides.

I appreciate ur knowlesge crazy, but is it possible to just find someone serviceable? If gibbs is constantly out, hes never going to get better. Where a guy with a much lower ceiling can still be better than gibbs. To me its all about logging hours on the pitch for these youngsters. They will never get better on the bench. And that goes for the likes of chamberlain as well, injury or not.

It's more a function of the way we play, rather than the the personal. Wenger's interested in balance, but he's also interested in attacking. In truth, our defensive play isn't so bad. Last year, we conceded the fewest goals in open play, but it was our set piece defending that was terrible. If you subtract the three games where we gave up 17 goals, against Man U, Blackburn, and Chelsea (41% of the goals we've give up this season), we've given up only 24 goals in 30 games.

We look really terrible when we give up goals, but Wenger's philosophy seems to be prevent chances from being created, which is the philosophy of nearly every attacking team in the world. Once the chance is created, we're not very good at dealing with it, but we're excellent at making sure the chance isn't created in the first place. I can guarantee you that if we have a healthy back four, next year will be our best year as a team defensively for a long time.

I'm all about finding another LB for next year, as Santos is absolutely scary on the field. Gibbs has such a high ceiling that I'm sure Wenger doesn't want to give up on him yet, but if he makes that choice, then I would be fine with it. I really want Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia, but I don't think that they will want to lose two LB's in the same year (with Jordi Alba almost certainly going to Barcelona). I'm pretty sure we are trying to get Luke Shaw from Southampton, but he's a very young option. I'm willing to give Gibbs the benefit of the doubt though.

I guess this is my biggest problem. We truly look incredibly clueless on some of our mistakes

The setplay weakness of last year still has me biting my nails each set play this season. Apparently we have also conceded 11 or 12 goals based on defensive errors, the most in the EPL.

I agree 100%. Doesn't Kos have a chance to make the French squad for the Euros? He and TV5 are both athletic and good in the air. Per gives a great third option. CB isn't really an issue in my mind.

Personally I like our starting back 4.. Santos is my only issue, but really can you expect to keep a guy who's good enough to start on a CL side waiting on your bench? So I'm not sure what realistic options there are

Looking at the EPL Table with 5 matches left Arsenal are 5 points clear of Tottenham and Newcastle and 7 points clear of Chelsea. Goal diffential is very much in our favor as well.

+6 versus Tottenham
+17 versus Newcastle
+7 versus Chelsea

If we blow third place it will be a meltdown of epic proportions. I just can't see this happening.

Just the way this particular team has won matches and actually ground out victories has me more optimistic than usual.

I think Newcastle has a tough run-in so that helps. If we beat Chelsea next Saturday, that should be the nail in their ECL coffin.

there is still hope of RVP breaking Ian Wright's record...

we have already played fulham and city 2x, but there is still one more team... Arsenal

think the manager would be pissed if he scored an OG vs WBA if we have already claimed 3rd place?

Mathieu would be awesome. I wish vander wiel played left back. Thats a guy i really, really like as far as defenders go.

Just a reminder, yeshd is replaying the arsenal woves game at 730 pm for anyone that didnt get to watch it. Channel 1702 or 702 for peeps with uverse. And yeshd is fricking awesome, they show a lot of arsenal stuff, Arsenal 360 is on rt now. Interviewing theo, and dam he sounds so propper.

Im going to miss uverse when i move to br. What does cox have as far as soccer channels go? I know they have fsc, but when i lived there they didnt even have it in hd.
