Initially this is how I thought, but then I realized that the whole point of holding on to him like this is to create a higher bidder. and you know it's going to be Man U knowing that they need to pay more to buy a player from a rival. I'm torn. I'd really hate to see another Gunner in Manchester.

Arsenal will be matched up with one of the following teams in the Champions League play-off round:

Athletic Bilbao (54), Lille (45), Copenhagen (45), Standard Liege (38), or Besiktas (34)

Also several reports of a 23.9 million bid submitted for Carvalho. Would be an expensive buy but worth it IMO

i mean i don't rate him, but he's better than jones or smalling, and maybe evans. i'd rather them continue to flounder at picking up a CB.

I hope we avoid Bilbao and Lille.

Yessss. But knowing our luck, we will draw one...

I would like to see Verm go to ManU b/c of more money for us and I don't have much faith in his ability as a footballer and am certainly not confident in his fitness. I think he could be more harm than good for their club.

jeremy wilson reporting barca and manU have bid on vermaelen. each have bid 10m and could possibly have a little bidding war going. obviously our preference is him going to barca.

arsene said TV5 is probably out. also said he sees Chambers at DM (at least long term). hmmmmm...wonder if that's a smokescreen for porto/other clubs with a DM we may be interested in or if he really thinks that. doesn't make much sense to shell out cash for carvalho if we think chambers is the long-term answer at that spot.

cavani's agent apparently said us and 'pool have approached them for a deal. probably bs to spur chelsea interest.

he also said we were never close to signing khedira because we have enough b2b MFs.

Regarding Verm, if barca bids 10, what would ManU have to throw down for us to keep him in the EPL?
15? 20?

Let's just nab Carvalho, Cavani, and a CB and then be done for the summer. Got it Arsene?

k thx

I'd say at least 15m. I don't love him, but he's better than at least 2 of the guys they're throwing out there now in a place they're desperate. I'm not apt to help them out. i'd rather they continue to whiff on their top targets.

Not going to happen. We would be fools to sell a promising player who takes up a homegrown spot. Now actually reading the article, which I didn't do in the first post I made about this, tells me this is all based on the speculation that Juve can increase his £80,000 a week pay package, which is a ridiculous assumption, given that if they do, he will be their highest paid player by some margin. Buffon and Tevez are on around 6 mil euros, and Wilshere is already on 5.5 euros.

If we were to sell, we could easily start a bidding war, since homegrown spots are so precious in the PL.

Another thing that came out of Wenger's press conference today is that he said Theo Walcott would be back in full training with the main group by Aug. 31.

This is interesting because I would think that means he could be in the squad for the home game against Manchester City on Sept. 13. Wenger said he might be "a little bit short" of being able to play in England's international match before that, but I think it would be awesome to have him on the bench for Citeh!

I think others in this thread saying they thought it would be October before he was back can push their expectation up by a couple of weeks.

Was asked about this today from a Chelsea fan. I made the exact same point about him being homegrown.

I wouldn't want to sell a 22 yr old Jack Wilshere ... he's only 22!!! Feels like he's been around forever.

yeah, i don't disagree. just thought it was interesting. if i wasn't an arsenal fan, i'd think that'd be a really interesting move. i think jack gets *at least* one year to step up. if he isn't a regular starter by next year, i think he might try pushing his way out.

they still have pirlo, though who knows how much longer he'll play. seems like he'd be a pogba or vidal replacement, if he was to be guaranteed a starting spot.

again. no way this happens this summer. but depending on how this season goes i don't think it's out of the question that jack could ask his way out for more PT. hopefully, he balls out this year, forces his way into the starting XI frequently, and blows up.

We're not selling Jack. Arteta, Flamini, Cazorla, and Rosicky probably only have one more year with us. Means next year our midfield 3 is jack, Aaron, and mesut. With both Chambo's rotating in sporadically as well as providing cover in defense(chambers) and on the wings(chamberlain). Even if we bring in a "real" DM like Carvalho, that's still 4 main guys for 3 spots with close to 50 games to play and that's not even accounting for injuries.
