Original from Russell's blog: LINK

This is being submitted to Sports Illustrated and ESPN, along with the US Soccer Organization.

My name is Russell J., I am the president and founder of the American Outlaws Davis chapter. Myself and 7 other American Outlaws Davis members made the drive from Davis to Pasadena for the Gold Cup Final this past Saturday.

Upon arriving to the stadium roads were blocked to get to lot H, the lot where the American Outlaws tailgate was being held, so we were told to drive all the way around the other side. We then had to ask 3 different staff members how to get to lot H and about half way through the drive around the stadium we were told by police to turn back because lot H was closed. This whole ordeal took about 20 minutes and could have easily been avoided if once lot H was full, it was told to the people at the entrance gate.

Finally after parking we walked to the tailgate to the loud chants of "CULERO" (loosely translating to "arse hole" or "jack arse") from the Mexico fans, many of them running up to us and putting their flags and noise makers within inches of our face. We walked around half of the parking lot to find the tailgate and only saw one pair of police officers walking around. Once we found the tailgate and finally settled in, we noticed that we were completely out numbered and surrounded. Mexico fans kept running through our tailgate, or coming up to members with the noise makers and starting shouting and pushing matches. About 30 minutes in, as we were all standing around talking, I looked up to see a glass bottle of beer flying straight for my friends head. Another American Outlaws member reached out his hand and deflected it and the bottle struck my friend in the back. I say this is lucky only because the bottle did not strike him in the head, if it had Im sure he would have had to go to the hospital.

Things calmed down for the next half hour, we decided to walk around and noticed that there were nice Mexico fans who wanted to take pictures with us and wish us luck in the game. Upon arriving back to the tailgate we noticed that about 8 police officers had moved into the area, even though they should have been there in the first place. There were more bottles, cans and other objects thrown into our tailgate, and more clashes of pushing and shouting matches. I was informed by an American Outlaws Seattle member via twitter yesterday that in one of these clashes a member was hit in the face with a Jack Daniels bottle by a Mexico fan. Where was the security?

When we marched to the stadium a few hours later we arrived at an open gate and were told that we couldn't enter through that gate, we were not given a reason. There were about 200-300 USA fans pinned in a corner, we moved to the next gate over, I was leading the pack and asked the woman in charge of security of that gate if we could get it. I was informed that it was a handicapped entrance only and we would have to get in line. I told the woman that for security reasons it wouldn't be wise to cram us in line with the Mexico fans. She told me that if she let us in she would be fired, and if we get attacked we should just "sue the police". I don't want to say who should, or shouldn't be hired to work at these events, but I can say that it was very obvious this woman had no interest in keeping us safe and was merely there to collect a paycheck.

I ushered the USA fans into line where I witnessed about 5 fights while waiting to get to the entrance gate, I saw USA fans, including women and children, pushed, verbally harassed, and spit on.

I want to make this a huge point. As I walked into the stadium the person checked my ticket, and let me in. There was no pat down, no metal detector, no wand, not even a bag search. He checked my ticket and said "go".

I could have brought a knife, a firearm, a bomb. Really anything I could have fit into my bag or hidden on my person would have gotten into that game with me.

When we arrived to our section it was riddled with Mexico fans, the section was supposed to be US supporters only, or at least thats what we were told. Every single section surrounding us was 99% filled with Mexico fans. We were sitting ducks.

As the game went on we were pelted with anything you can imagine, at one point I was hit with a blowup sex doll. My friends were hit with coins, bottles and beer. One of the USA fans in our section got hit with a bottle flung in from who knows where and turned to a security guard to complain about the lack of action, the security guard stood up on a higher seat, towered over the man and screamed "Turn around and watch the fricking game!". I wish I was exaggerating, but Im not. Turning and looking up at the crowd all I could see between things flying at my head, were fights. I witnessed a USA fan walk past our section, face bloodied, barely walking, as if he was in a war zone trying to get himself to safety, finally a security guard spotted and helped him.

The main issue I have with the whole day is what happened to our female members, one of them was sexually harassed and groped. This I will not stand for. I would gladly take a bottle to the face to make sure that this NEVER has to happen to any female fan, ever. After the game me and my friends got out of the stadium as fast as possible.

I know that US Soccer is not at fault for what happened on Saturday, but I do know there are things you can do to make sure it does not happen again.

After putting my story on twitter I received messages from people about their horrible experiences at the stadium as USA fans. One girl who went with her father had to leave at half time from getting attacked and having beer poured on them. I truly feel sorry for those USA fans that weren't in our large group, they must have been like a piece of meat to a pack of wolves. There very little security help, and the security guards did pretty much the bare minimum.

My question is how long until some one is killed, or a girl is raped. These things seem severe but what I witnessed at this game was the precursor to those acts. Some of these Mexico fans have nothing but pure hatred for the USA fans. I know not every fan is bad, but when your outnumbered by about 90,000 people, the bad eggs are gonna be there in full force.

I love soccer, I've done all I can to make sure that it grows in this country, and I will continue to support and fight for soccer. But I cannot defend what happened on Saturday, and if we lose fans because of it, I can not blame them.

Please do what you can to make sure this never happens again. No fan should ever have to go through what me and my friends went through on Saturday. If you need anything else from me I will be more than happy to help.

Sincerely,

Russell J.

And here is my review of the GC final on the Ticketmaster website:

The US-Mexico match was unforgettable... in a bad way. In addition to the fact that there was no traffic control and it took almost two hours to drive the last mile to the stadium, once we were around the Rose Bowl we were immediately surrounded by hostile Mexico fans. Although we kept to ourselves and did nothing to provoke them (I was even afraid to cheer for the US), we still had beer thrown on us, were taunted incessantly, and then had racist epithets hurled at us (yes, people can be racist against white folks, too). US fans were targeted from the start, essentially. There was NO security in sight. NONE. I did not once see a security guard there to help out anyone who was getting attacked by the Mexico fans. I almost saw several fights break out, but the US fans knew better than to react to the abuse considering they were outnumbered 20 to 1 and would surely have been on the wrong end of a crazed, drunken, mob-induced beat-down. Some people even got hit in the head with glass bottles thrown by Mexican fans and had to go to the hospital. Not to mention, there were no metal detectors of any kind at the entrances. I'm surprised no one got shanked. The end ceremony was spoiled by the Mexican fans booing the American team getting their runners up medals, and on the way out we were continually goaded, taunted, and yelled at by Mexicans, many of whom ran up to us and shouted "4-2" in our face. Being an LSU fan I have seen some horrendous tailgating behavior, but the Mexican fans treated the stadium and the outlying areas like one big garbage heap. It was disgusting. I am glad I experienced watching the US team play, and congrats to El Tri for a well-earned victory. However, the behavior of the Mexican fans was atrocious and I will never again attend a US-Mexico game.

Thoughts? Comments? Did anyone else go to the game, and if so, what was your experience?

Link it to his blog. Maybe it'll get more exposure. That is what he is trying to do.

I'd like to think of myself as a fair person with no racism but this is the pushing point. Those fricking assholes (I'm really trying not to use a racist comment) can get the frick out of our country if they are going to act like god damn animals. frick Mexico and their classless fans. I realize soccer breeds a different type of game day experience, perhaps more intense than the average American event but this is unreal. I wouldn't expect this to be okay in Mexico, let alone in the fricking UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Holy shite, I am so mad right now. I am disgusted at what happened to the female fans too, frick Mexico. My interest in the game has grown and with that, so has my burning hatred for that piece of shite country that contributes nothing.

My question is this: did people really not see this coming? I mean it's Mexico for fricks sake. I thought that kind of behavior was expected.

I hate Mexico more than anyone here but I had nothing but pleasant experiences with Mexican fans in Houston. They talked shite to me and I talked shite back to them, they were mainly joking while I was completely serious. The worst thing was when they scored against Honduras and everyone in the stadium threw their drinks and I was covered in cokes and beers.

Right. Mexico is a country has contributed nothing to the world. Their fans seriously have nothing to be proud of. We are superior to them in literally every single thing imaginable. They can only compete with us in a couple of fricking sports we comparatively don't give a shite about, namely soccer and maybe boxing. And we still have a winning record against them in the past 20 years.

I feel bad for the author of that letter. If some Mexican trash tried to grope my girlfriend I would take his Sol bottle away from him, break it on his face, and stab him in the throat with it. Then I'd probably scream something like "Remember the Alamo" while flashing his daughter and his newly widowed wife. Then I'd go home and read/post on TD.

i can't tell if the posters in the reddit thread are trolling or not. if they aren't, the "rest of the world" (or two or three reddit posters) seems to be completely out of tune with sporting culture in the united states

some of the best:

1. the american outlaws is a group of ultras
a. they are affiliated with a 1%er motorcycle gang
b. their attire is "thuggish" (apparently, many people are completely unfamiliar with what thuggish attire looks like in america)
2. the american public is familiar with that type of behavior, especially those that attend SEC football games
3. aggressive name-calling in a sporting atmosphere usually escalates to something more
4. intense rivalry always results in a clusterfrick, everywhere. americans deal with it
5. large scale screening of ticketed fans shouldn't be expected because we complain about the tsa

hopefully, some prominent journalist latches onto the letter

For the love of JC.

You're in Chicanoland, the sport is soccer, and Méjico is involved.

What did you really, really expect?

American Outlaw?

I went to the USA - Mexico game in Houston in 2008, with my wife, and had zero issues. We were in a US supporters section (not the Sam's Army section), but still sold as a US supporter's section. Our section was probably 70 percent Mexican. We had ZERO problems with the fans around. They congratulated us when we scored, we did the same. We shook hands after the game, everybody took pictures.

There was some pushy-shovy between drunks going on after the game on the concourses and whatnot, but I've seen that happen at every highly attended sporting event I've ever been to. BFD.

This guy sounds like an a-hole, and assholes attract more assholes.

PS: You can bitch about Bornstein all you want, but you haven't personally felt the despair of watching the team against Mexico only to see Ramiro Corrales and Drew Moor as the outside backs.

Here is what a teammate of mine said who attended the game:

quote:

went to the gold cup usa vs mexico final at the rose bowl. There were about 92,000 people in attendance and 90,000 of them were mexico fans.
About thirty minutes into the game two of my friends felt something spraying onto the back of their legs. We turned around to find a drunk middle aged mexican guy with his dick hanging out just standing there peeing on them. We got the mess settled and returned to watching the inevitable comeback. Shortly after, the same guy once again whipped it out and tried to pee on me as I basically jumped into the guys arms next to me. You may be wondering at this point why this guy was still in the stands and not taken away. Apparently you have to flash 92,000 people twice before there is a problem. In addition to all this there was plenty of spitting and beer tossing into the small USA section.

That is disgusting.

I also went to the semis in Houston. The Mexico fans weren't a problem, but that was only because we weren't playing Mexico. They weren't very nice to the Honduras fans.

I'm 50/50 on this one. There did seem to be a lack of decent security, and it's a shame that a guy that bought American Outlaw tickets and yet was surrounded by Mexico fans. How did that work out...?

As for the lack of civility, yeah, sounds like butthurt to me. It's an intense rivalry game. If there's cursing and the occasional projectile (I condemn glass bottles, obviously, but plastic bottles, balled up paper - not a big deal in the grand scheme of things) then that's not really out of the ordinary.

I lived in Mexico City a number of years ago, well, visited/went to school for two months. Loved it.

Not anymore. It's not racist or stereotyping when it continues, unabated.

If this game is played in the Rose Bowl again it seems like they should either have more security there or move the game to another city.

Did you go to the game? No? Well I did. I'm not butthurt, I'm just pissed that we were treated like crap and security was nonexistant. I went to enjoy the game and the Mexican fans made it a miserable experience. People were attacked, cursed at, had beers thrown on them, and yes, even peed on.

And those plastic bottles? My dad was hit in the back by a full bottle of water. The plastic cups? Multiple times I saw FULL glasses of beer thrown at the US fans in front of us. Butthurt my arse. That shite is ridiculous.

Some of the people in this thread are being complete assholes, you have every right to complain. It sounds like US fans almost had to fear for their lives at this sh*tfest. I feel for you and all of our fans that were there
