You can lead Nani to water, but he'll probably just fall in

No doubt it was a dive, but the defender left his leg out there like an idiot and was asking for it imo.

I wish he wouldn't have done it, but it's a smart play..there is no denying that.

Young is British. There's no way you can convince me it was a dive.

Bleh....Young kicks the ball away from the fullback and then runs straight away from it and toward the Villa guy. The guy is actually pulling his leg away from Young when Ashley runs into him, almost in the exact opposite direction of the ball.

Not to mention that Young is the one that steps on his foot, not vice versa. I thought the play was actually pretty amusing, since we all knew United would win it with or without the spot kick.

United deserved the win, but that was most certainly a dive and not a penalty.

I believe the technique goes something like this.

Defender leaves his leg out (doesn't matter if he was trying to pull it away)

Offensive player pushes the ball past the defender, also leaves his own leg out.

Said legs make contact and offensive player goes to ground.

It was simulation, I'm not denying that fact.

This is the part that's wrong though.

He didn't "leave his leg out"

He stepped ON the defenders foot, keeping it in place with his right, and then kicked INTO the trapped foot with his other leg, jumped, went spread eagle, and dove.

It's a smart play...if there's a chance it might get called, sell it like crazy.

They taught us in basketball that if we were good free throw shooters to try and get a foul call every time we were contested. Gotta do a little acting, it's just the smart way to play.

I expect no complaining about diving from you, especially when it comes to Suarez.

lol what's he supposed to do? Levitate in the air? Because the ball is kicked away from the fullback and Young, instead of running toward the ball, runs the opposite direction into the poor Villa defender who is just standing there.

He didn't push it "past" him. He pushed the ball away from him. Then he ran the opposite direction straight into the dude who was just standing there. What's the fullback supposed to do? Jump out of his way and give him the road? This isn't freeze tag where people run away from the guy that's "it" (in this case, Young).

I'm a Man U fan, but that is bush league. ALL of this flopping and diving is BS - needs to stop!!!

I've said it before - suspensions of more than one game with a hefty fine attached. That would stop that garbage!!

Its a definite dive, I don't think theres any question he knows exactly what he's doing. Ashley Young is one of my favorite players ever but Aston Villa fans have known for a long time about this side of his game and its unfortunate. I'm pretty sure he's either led or been at the top of the list in penaltys drawn for the last several years, he's mastered "the art" of drawing penaltys.

Two COMPLETELY different scenarios. If there is legit contact and a player dives, or tries to draw a foul I think it's perfectly acceptable (dont hate, but I do this).

But it gets out of hand when a player goes untouched (or better yet steps on the defenders foot) and tries to dive for a foul, see also Bale's dive against Arsenal.

Didn't Tevez get carded the other day for diving, when he actually got tripped up in the box?

I need to clarify.

I don't condone not getting touched and "diving". I'm saying that if there's contact, I'm ok with a little acting.

If you don't get touched and you hit the ground on purpose, that's where I draw the line. But, if you get contact, you can try to sell a foul (within reason). But don't act like you broke your leg, squirming on the ground. I hate that.

After watching the play over and over, I think we got away with what Young did yesterday. He set that up. But if the Villa guy would have clipped him a little bit on his own, I think it's ok for Young to sell a penalty. I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

Villa's last game had one of their young players tripped but carded for simulation, yet Villa's boss and everyone else thought Young dove but got awarded the penalty. That and SAF vehemently defending the penalty call made me laugh. SAF said Young made the most of it, going down easy and kicking his legs, but he felt it was clearly a penalty.
